The end of daffodil season is here, and the very last to bloom is an heirloom I dug from an abandoned home site many years ago, Narcissus x medioluteus, a natural hybrid of N.poeticus var. recurvus and N.tazetta. The blooms are nestled among the foliage, and aren't particularly showy, but they are among the most fragrant daffs. Some years I have smelled them before I saw that they were blooming. I see that Brent and Becky's isn't offering them in the current catalog, but I have seen them offered at Old House Gardens.

This is one I nearly lost, and do not know the id. It is miniature in stature, and late blooming, so it easily becomes overwhelmed by other plants. I thought I was planting tazetta, Martinette when I planted them. Any suggestions as to the id would be appreciated.

Your bleeding heart in the background is really pretty too, Neal. Thumbs up

Mine shot up just in time to get freeze damage...again, so I'm really enjoying seeing yours.

Green throated daffodils are always appealing, very nice Neal. Can't grow that bleeding heart, it carks it every year for me, whenever I plant it.
This is my best green throated daffodil, not as smooth as what I'd like, but still OK.
Did you end up saving any pollen?

Wow! That green eyed beauty is very special! I didn't save any pollen, lots of rain and storms have kept me out of the garden much for the last week or so (aside from running out between rains to take pictures, LOL).

Thanks, Chelle- I'm surprised these bleeding hearts weren't harmed by frosts we've had the last few nights. That's what I like about that photo, the daff is blurry, but the bleeding heart is more in focus.

Their stems may have been more hardened since they were up for longer than a day before the frosts hit. Just guessing here, but it seems plausible anyway. Mine were newly emerged, and I'd think still tender as the dickens; however, I just checked on it and it's trying to recover. Midway down the stem was where it was blackened and crunchy, but now it just looks scuffed a bit...and it's straightened back up. Yay! Hurray!

Queen of the North is my favorite daffodil today. She's s in a shadier location, and still she stands so straight and proud! Lovey dubby

Queen of the North is beautiful! I hadn't seen that one before. I'm getting more intrigued by the small cup division.

I think you're right about the maturity of the bleeding heart making it more or less prone to frost damage- newly emerged growth is tender. The good thing is they do tend to recover and keep growing. Some years I've had all the top growth frozen, but new growth replaced it.

Queen of the North came from Old House Gardens as well.

Here's another that I'm liking a lot.

Not sure yet if this is going to be one of my favorites, but then again I haven't given it the sniff test yet. I'm not really crazy about the color array of the cup at this point.

Beautiful photos of Cragford! I planted 5 of them last fall, and they bloomed a bit stunted looking. Hoping they settle in and I can get a good idea what they're like next spring.

Sweet Love does have an unusual shade of yellow, but I rather like it. It does have nice fragrance.

Smiling Sun has just moved way up on my list of favorite daffs. On April 15 I posted some pics of it when most of the buds had opened. Those have since faded, but a batch of secondary buds have now opened! This is my first year growing it, and I hope it increases well, because it certainly offers the longest display of any daff I've grown.

I forgot to add that Smiling Sun had 7 blooms (from 5 bulbs) the first time, and now there are 9 more. That is impressive bloom power!
