Some were seeds I won on the LA but most were shared wth me by 3 members here, and of course I created many of my own crosses from existing seedlings. I had wanted Paper Butterfly because of the genes (and I saw all the children it has produced), but I can't always tell which cultivars show resistance to rust. I've read conflicting information on many cultivars concerning rust. Regardless, I really am attracted to the unknown genetics of seedlings. I have one currently that was so-so last year when it bloomed. Beautiful blooms, but not many buds. This year it has 3 and perhaps more scapes and just loaded with buds. It is a cross of Stippled Statement with unknown pollen parent. It is my favorite one so far of all that I have grown. When it starts blooming I will post a photo on the April Seedling Blooms thread. That one is MY cup of tea! I got the seed from Sandi (seedsower).
I have found as you mentioned very reasonably priced daylilies on the LA and elsewhere, but the shipping is a deal-killer for me on many of them. I am not cheap, I am on a very tight budget annually for my gardens. So seeds work out the cheapest for me. Even if I only get a few worthwhile crosses, they multiple and can be planted around my yard in other places in the future. I will eventually cull many of my seedlings because of the rust issue, but it sure is fun to see what you get from seeds!
