I have never thought about using the cinnamon on the cut ends of the plumeria. During the spring and summer months, rot doesn't seem to be a problem but perhaps, just in case, I need to start using it when I take my cuttings.

Thank you for discussing this. I tip my hat to you. We have had warm days close to 90º despite the rains and flooding. The nights are down into the mid 70's. IOW, summer is fast approaching. I didn't think lack of warmth was an issue or I would have waited to cut it down. The rain, as I suspected might have been the culprit as we have received more than our share in SouthEast Texas/Houston area during the past 2-1/2 weeks with more to come. The good news is that all traces of a drought is gone in our area, the trees and landscape are green, mushrooms are sprouting, frogs and toads are happy, and the ponds are full. The bad news is the flooding but fortunately not our home, lack of sunshine, and now what looks like rot on my newly cut Riviera Rainbow. Oh, yes, and the mosquitoes. Oh! Lawdy! The mosquitoes are baaad!

Riviera Rainbow is a fast grower with her big, long strapping leaves. She always had the perfect combinations of sun, breeze and rain. So I am trying hard not to worry. The cuttings put so many smiles on my friends' faces, for that I am grateful as a sharing Plant Person. I am learning through my experience, when it is experience that I am lacking. This tree will survive with the help of ATP I know it. But it won't stop my worrying until it shows signs that what I have done, what should have worked, indeed is working.

I did a Newbie thing. I dried off the goo with Q-tips. It it pretty deep but i dont think true rot? What do i know? But now it is dry-ish. Opting for more Gladwrap but securing it so rain won't get in. That would be a lot of candle wax. Comments? Hints? Suggestions?

Yeah it doesn't look bad. I would probably have poured some peroxide in it before sealing, but I'd leave it be for now.

I was going to suggest using cinnamon on plumeria cuttings.
Orchid growers use it all the time on divisions and prunings. One of our big local nurseries is having a seminar this weekend on mounting orchids (rather than potting them); I've heard this grower talk before -- he uses cinnamon all the time.

Thumbs up

I have always had a dozen or so mounted orchids but for some reason, several weeks ago (spring fever? Whistling ) decided do so some more mounts. I ended up doing two dozen of them on all kinds of woods. Cork is still my favorite mount material.

Curiosity got the better of me and I am glad it did. Seems the seal wasn't tight and it got wet inside the hole in the trunk from our recent flooding rains. I cleaned it our and dried it out with Q-Tips and found 3-4 tiny white worms. If they were infant maggots then I am glad I got it cleaned out. The hole did seem little deeper. I poured hydrogen peroxide into it and let it bubble up some. Then covered it again with new foil sandwiched between Saran Wrap this time, not Stretch and Seal. I am not sure how the moisture got up underneath there but I tightened the rubber band over the Saran an extra rotation. I hope I worry all for naught. But I hope I am active with it to keep it rot free.

drdawg said:I never worry about my plumeria when I take cuttings. The cuttings will all go into the greenhouse because rooting them is done in dry perlite. The rooted plant that was cut, well, she stays outside in the weather and full sun. I have never put those plants that have had cuttings taken in the shade. I have never used wax and never even heard of it being used. Just let those cut ends callous. Everything will be fine.

That's just the way I do it and apparently I don't do a lot of things that others do. Sighing!

Ken, your repeated confidence overwhelms me. Thanks for the "I told you so". Seeing how I have never chopped down any 10 foot tree with the desire for it to regrow, let alone flower, I was nervous as all heck. It was my first time. I think I am allowed. Next time might be easier. IDK? I don't have tons of plumeria. I probably will be just as nervous and come here for support while doing it. Riviera Rainbow seems to be quite hearty, a tough plant, fast-grower. Now that it is growing again, I am hardly worried that it will re-bloom. I just know it will! Thumbs up I think it chose me as it's first "victim" to teach me a few things in Plumeria Life. Plants are like this. Yes they are!

Thumbs up It gets easier every time you do it. Whistling I guess I do have an optimistic attitude about most things. My glass is usually half full. Smiling

Oh, I have a bit of news about my experiment with those two 6' seedlings which I cut almost two weeks ago. I had no idea what the rooted "stubs" would do or whether the cuttings would root. These were the first seedlings I had ever grown. I still don't know about the rooting aspect but the stubs are growing tips. One has five tips showing and the other one has three tips. I looks like rather than very tall, single tip plants, I will have lots of tips. I think Plumeria "like" being cut back. Sticking tongue out I know some of you think that's about as bad as "Crepe-murder". Shrug!

There you go, Cheryl! I am seeing 3-4 tips growing. You'll soon have a nice, branched tree. Thumbs up

Are any of the rootings showing signs of growth yet?
