I'll try walmart since I don't have an Ace hardware nearby. Thumbs up Otherwise I'll have to use composted cow manure.

Light is good and sometimes worth the expense to avoid injury. What do consider a good price. I looked online and it seems $1 per lb is about the price when shipping is included

Composted manure is fine!

My receipt is in the kitchen and I'm in on a break from the sun and the wind. I'll return later with the price I paid but I bought it locally. This morning I had to move the latest bag, 25 pounds. That isn't exactly light! I prefer the smaller bags.

So once I get the clematis, I'll take pic to so I'll know size container to use. I'll get some composted cow manure, since I need it for other plants.

That's where I'd fall short on advice. I wouldn't know what size pot to use. I only have one in a pot here and it is "large" but have never measured width, depth or height. I'll do that when I go out but some clematis roots are huge (or, in the right conditions can certainly grow huge) so I think the larger pots would be better but I still don't know what size!

Definitely buy the composted manure!

Blue Light, from a different source but the same year as the abomination above and my fault for letting it get so potbound!

Finally, a bloom on Blue Light:

Oh wow, they have a massive root system. I guess I better look for larger pots? The first Blue Light root looks so sad. I'm glad you got a better plant from another source. The bloom is so pretty too.

My pot is 17" high and 14" wide. I'd suggest one at least that big for yours, Cameron.

I complained about the first Blue Light and they sent me another miserable identical twin. Neither of those ever grew and the company lost me as a customer. It was not one of our usual clematis nurseries.

I think I have a pot nearly that size. Its not decorative by any means but it will serve its purpose. I can't believe that company sent you another small root. That's disappointing. Thumbs down

Anna - I can't find my receipt but will ask next time I'm in the store. It's just a mile away.
In any event, if it's hard to find just don't bother thinking about it. Use composted manure.

Cameron - It's a fairly common size for a large pot.
When the second pathetic clematis arrived I was shocked to see it was as bad as the first one. The biggest surprise is that it was double the cost of the one I bought from Garden Crossing. They, and Brushwood, are excellent sources and their plants thrive for me.

I just have never been able to grow a clematis in a large pot
the roots get too hot for all plants here in lower zone 8
in alabama

I wish you have a raised area and half day sun to plant your clematis..
Mine are in half day sun...morning and have done well ..
I bought soil and mixed in a sandy soil with it for their holes
and the holes were 2 foot wide and 2 foot deep...

They liked to be watered with the water hose deeply
every 10 days here ...April through november...

I always just put my finger beside a plant or take
a spade and go down 2 inches...if it is dry then
I need to water it one inch deep or 2 inches down
with a bucket of water slowly...

never water at night or over head sprinklers
any perennial.. foliage ...

that was the hardest part when I was younger and learning
was when to water or not water

Here are my trellis to show you where they are planted
in half day sunshine and not in a low boggy area...

Good luck with your clematis..

Sheri in Alabama

Thank you for that information Sheri. Your clematis and flowerbeds look amazing! I was worried about the roots getting too hot in containers. Thumbs up

Beautiful Sheri!
It is possible to grow them in containers. Can't think of the website off hand but someone in Australia (HOT!) who has an amazing container collection. Not only the size, location and clematis choice but the container composition is important too. I think though they do need extra TLC .Doesn't Evison have special smaller clems special for containers?

Would a terra cotta pot hold too much heat? I painted a few two years ago but I've never put plants in any of them.

I am not sure. I use alot of those insulated lightweight type pots. Terracotta breathes but not when it has paint. If you are planning to put in a flowerbed with lots of foliage around it and not in full Texas sun, probably ok. You have to mulch it well. How big is it?
