September photo of my Mandevilla, just a photo update for my reference:

Quite overgrown, but it has some nice blooms still going, so just allowing it to go that way, pretty soon it will be haircut time!

The person that gave these beautiful flowers their 'non-botanical' name (Chilean jessamine - sp?) did a big mistake, since they are native to Argentina, not Chile.

Something similar happened with Tropaeolum tricolor (Bolivian nasturtium), since they are endemic to Chile.

Another example are Alstroemerias - although Chile has more endemic species than the other countries (Peru, Brazil, Bolivia and Argentina), you know them as Peruvian Lily. If I am not mistaken, all hybrids were obtained from Chilean endemic species.

I have both a Mandevilla and a Dipladenia. They ARE different plants - regardless of what the plant classifiying police want to tell us. Many still classify them as separate plants. Both have bloomed for me non stop since early May and are still in full bore bloom. On my deck in full sun all day. Both must be watered at least once a day. When it was well over 100 in August, I had to water 2 times a day. I give them bloom booster fertilizer every 2 weeks.

Some key differences:

Mandevilla leaves are bigger - 10 - 30 %
Mandevilla stems are larger
Dipladenia is a smaller plant and more shrub like. They both vine, though the Mandevilla is more aggressive.
The leaves of the Mandevilla are more glossy though they are both glossy.

I set seed on my Dipladenia last year, though I misplaced them and never got them planted. Grumbling
No indication of seeds this year, but I have not looked closely.

Hmmm................I think the dipladaia leaves are darker and much glossier than the mandevilla. At least mine are.

My eyesight sucks. But one thing I have read many places is a key is leaf size. My Mandavilla leaves are 3 + x the size of the Dipladenia.

Regardless -- they are both still beautiful. And last winter they both did very well and just kept blooming all winter inside on a table in my bedroom.

My mandevilla had a very slow start this year, but still thankful that as slow as it went, it finally gave me three cute blooms..appreciating all that it can give!

I put my mandevilla on the fence in the dog run and they seem to love it. Sun all day and the last three days have been over 100 deg. but, they get watered every morning and evening. These three are all the same color. Red. Love the pink but have not yet seen it around here for sale.

Saw a White one two years ago. Lady was sposed to let me try to make a baby via layering but she didn't. My wife surprised me a couple weeks ago with a huge hanging basket with a White Mandevilla and pink Vinca.

I also have one Mandevilla (red) and two Dipladenia - one pink and one red. Water 1 or 2 times a day on my deck.

Oh David, I would love to have other colors of the Mandevilla but the only problem I have with them is that they are so difficult to keep clean of Mealy Bug during the winter in the GH. I am so afraid the other tropicals will become infested because If I do not keep after them weekly they just take over. Do you have a problem with mealy bug on Mandevilla?

No.

Since I have lived here and resumed gardening, I had not had a problem with mealy bugs til just recently. On my orchids of all things. I think I brought them in on a recent purchase.

Hate the freaking things! They suck.

But my biggest nemesis is Aphids. They love to infest my basement over-wintering/seed starting area - every year. And outside they attack my milkweed. Daily routine to squish them.

And of course this year we have a REAL problem with Japanese beetles - everyone is! They are devastating my roses - and everything else.

My mandevilla sneaks in a lone bloom this Fall. I guess it is enjoying our sporadic rains.

All my mandevilla are in the greenhouse for the winter and still blooming. The white never did bloom but it is a very young plant. The reds all went crazy. Mine are in full sun all summer but do get watered almost every day since they are in containers. No mealy bug all summer. I am watching closely all of them in the greenhouse. They were a mess last year so I know I will not escape them this year.

Thank you. I have been very lucky with them. If only the mealy bug were not so eager to get on them. That is their biggest problem for me.

The Mandevilla I've had for a couple of years has set a seed pod. Anyone have any experience to share? I was evaluating how much to cut back for the winter when I saw it.

Donald

I harvested seeds 2 years ago and planted some a couple of different ways. The seeds looked okay, but I got zero germination.
