I have Magnus and Prairy (I never could spell!) They seed themselves amongst the wild soladago and some Greek oregano and some wild asters. They get aster yellows and were a mess last year but some seem to recover and bloom ed well this year. There is a big clump of phlox Laura that looks good with them that I may try some cuttings from and also cross it with a late white phlox- though I never started the seeds I got last year! I taught myself how to pollinate them but still have to learn how to start the seeds. May just plant them in a sheltered spot outside as I get too disorganized to go through complicated stratification procedures and, evidently, phlox seeds need heat and cold periods. May just germinate if left out. There is one very different echy seedling, probably a chance bee or hummingbird pollination, that is half as high as the other echsIhave to move it, volunteers grow where they fall and it is against a concrete path and will get shoveled away next winter if I don't. Cogitating on when and how to do this-cut it back and do it now, try and divide it after bloom, Spring is out, Cuttings? They sound complicated as I think they use root cuttings, may just have to forge ahead and hope. But it would look good in front of some liatris and I like the seedling, darker, smaller, and wider petals.---Weeedy

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could tell me if Tomato Soup is a hardy coneflower? I just have the old fashioned purple and a short white one right now. I would love to trade for a few if anyone has extra. Thank you!

Hi, Julia
Which ones have you had the best luck with? Magnus? Have you tried saving seed from any of yours? If so any luck?

Hi Teresa,
This same topic came up over on the PNW forum.

I don't like Magnus because I think the color is muddy.
Yes, I saved seeds one year from my hybrids that were not sterile. Everyone pink but nice pink. I will get a picture of my seed plants , it's dark now.
They need to be planted well ahead of your first frost for the best survival rate.

I have Tomato Soup for about 5 years now, but there are now nicer reds. Look at Dixie Scarlet which has grown into a larger plant for me.

I have a garden center by me that carries over 30 varieties each year. Also Santa Rosa Gardens have good sales.

I needed groceries today so I drove 30 mi to go have lunch with my kids and went to Krogers. They had some nice plants but I hate it when they don't have anything tagged or some of the hosta was, but incorrectly Angry

What would be some good started cones?

I did buy a short white that is going to seed. How do you collect your seed? Thanks

Even though some of the blooms are fading, they are still pretty.

And the fading blooms become seedheads that attract goldfinches! In my zone 7b garden the coneflowers have all gone to seed and there are goldfinches galore.

Pull them apart and under the pricklies are what look like mini sunflower seeds. You can plant and have more coneflowers!

Wintersowing works well with coneflowers.

Yes coneflower seeds seem to need cold. Except for Indian summer, which can be planted in spring and will germinate without cold.
