I remember that daylily No Mistake Plantation. In my earlier days of collecting I often bought daylilies from Wild. I wonder if Wild's would have Baby Keith??

So interesting what is being discovered about Baby Keith and leads to find the cultivar (and others).

Thanks for that video link, Sue. I didn't see it until you posted the link. Truly lovely place, sure wished I had $4 million. Big Grin

Excellent idea, Cindy. I have noticed that sellers often have "retired" daylilies that are not featured in their catalogues, but they still grow. It can't hurt to ask!

I was thinking it might show if there were any extensive gardens there currently but the still pictures in the other link were more informative from that point of view and actually showed some daylilies.

The thing about the daylilies in the photos is that they are probably no longer known or marked. They could also be crosses of the original cultivars. Since the place is for sale, my guess is that it might be a dead end to find Baby Keith. It would seem that perhaps relatives would have some of the original cultivars? That is the lead I would persue along with Wilds.

Could well be, but Dnd said earlier in the thread: "Whether or not any daylilies remain on that plantation remain to be see. This might be a point where I could use help from someone on this site who lives near the plantation to call the realtor and schedule a 'showing' and find out discretely if the daylilies are still there (and labelled) or not, LoL!".

So we know there were daylilies there at the time those pics were taken, whenever that was. No idea about labels though. The extent of my spying is limited to the internet Hilarious!

DND, I don't know if this was mentioned in this thread or not, but you could go on Lily Auction and list Baby Keith as a wanted item, that way sellers can look over all of the wanted items and if they have it, they may list it. I have done that myself.

Looking through the AHS email Robin archives, there is mention of a Mrs. Hayward who was a Primos (the brother of Guy) and who named a number of daylilies after the Primos family members. They apparently have or had then (the email dates back to 2001) a "family bed" of daylilies. I can't quote the email in full because AHS Robin guidelines prohibit re-posting posts. I know the author of the email is deceased. I found no mention of 'Baby Keith' in the AHS email Robin archives.

Called and left a message for James again today. That was my few minutes of 'garden time' I allowed myself today.

(We're trying to move into a house with more land right now, so the search and research of different properties is taking ALL of my time right now....except for the few peppered-in moments where I'm caring for my cabin-fevered furbaby or my elderly-and-somewhat-incontinent furbaby.)

I just saw this thread and I must say ya'lls creativity in researching this has been interesting. I just spent 7 months in search of an old pharmacy bottle for my daughter - so I can at least somewhat relate. Maybe I needed your help with that because you all have great ideas! Smiling

I am curious, did your venture start just because of the name Baby Keith? since I believe you said in one of the early posts that you haven't actually seen the daylily. I find it fascinating how many thousands of daylilies there are out there - and more being added every year. I must say, I never thought about the fact that the name couldn't be repeated - guess I knew that, just never thought about it from that perspective. I live about 3.5 hrs from Jackson, and from the looks of things, would probably be about the same distance to the No Mistake Plantation. I live in South Arkansas - so if you get to the point that you need someone in a southern state to plant some (assuming you locate them) I would be happy to help. Have you seen photos of any of her DLs or just read the names? Just curious what started the search.............. but I love a good hunt! LOL Best of luck...............

Genna,

Thank you! I've been so busy lately (my husband and I are planning to move) that I haven't had time to pursue this any more over the last couple of weeks. The guy I was hoping to get some information from isn't returning my calls-he called back once, but not again since I tried reaching him since. (It may be a number of weeks before I am able to pursue this again.)

It truly was the name that started all of this. I have never seen the daylily in person and it will probably be a hoot if I go to all of this trouble for a dippy little flower, but if that's the case, so be it. Hilarious!

I really, really appreciate your offering to help. I don't think I'm to the point where I want to bother people to go hours out of their way, but I will let you know if I get to that point. It may come to be that I will need someone to have 'backup copies' of the daylilies...as in keep a portion of each of the cultivars in case any of them perish in the harsher northern region I am in.

Thanks for following the thread! So the question is, did you find the old pharmacy bottle(s) that you needed? I hope so! As for the creativity, I appreciate the compliment! I wouldn't be where I'm at today if I weren't good at Googling and researching things. When I latch on to things, I dive in head first...so I have a lot of figurative goose eggs on my head, but that's just how I do things, I suppose. Rolling my eyes.

Congratulations on the pending move - going across town? or across the state? OR to another state?? Either way, I guess there is a lot of work ahead. I can't imagine having to sort thru and pack all my junk to move.....thought I was going to have to move 3 years ago and I am thankful that we didn't have to.

On the bottle: My daughter just completed her first year of pharmacy school yesterday. Our last name is Hargis. So, only 1 or 2 weeks into pharmacy school last August, she got curious if there had ever been another "Hargis" that was a pharmacist. She started googling and found an article that had been written about a woman named Modeste Hargis who was the first woman pharmacist in the state of Florida. She operated her pharmacy (multiple locations) in Pensacola. IN this article she found was a photograph of several bottles from Hargis pharmacy that were embossed with the name on the front. My daughter already had a very small pharmacy bottle collection - and of course, she wanted a "Hargis Pharmacy" bottle. Smiling So, I thought "ok, I surely can locate one of those as a Christmas surprise"..... but it was a much more daunting task than I had planned for. Turns out there are some VERY serious bottle collectors in the Pensacola area and there are just a few of them that own most of the Hargis bottles that are known to exist. About January, I decided I would be doing good to locate one by graduation!! Thankfully, I managed to make friends with a collector down there who was active in the bottle club and he went out of his way to try to help me locate a bottle for her. My husband and I had even gone to a bottle show in Jackson to try to make contacts and help reach out to people who deal in bottles. He wanted us to try to attend a show close to Mobile because several of the people from Pensacola area would be there - and he thought it would help for them to meet us in person. That show was March 25, so we decided we would attend and our daughter would be able to go with us because she was starting her spring break. About a week before that show, Richard emailed me beside himself because he had located someone who had extras of some of the Hargis bottles and they were supposed to be coming to the show. It was very back and forth as to whether they would or would not part with the extras, how much the would charge for them, exactly how many extras there were, etc........and the night before the show, Richard texted me to tell me that the guy was not actually coming to the show because of a baseball tourney that his son was playing in. Confused I had not told my daughter about the bottles because I wanted it to be a surprise, plus, it was so 'iffy' that I didn't want to get her hopes up and then not get one. We were about 4 hrs into the trip and had stopped for lunch when Richard texted me a picture of 3!!! Bottles and he had them in his possession - and the most wonderful part was that the guy was GIVING them to my daughter and not charging her at all for them! I was TOTALLY overwhelmed and SO excited, but I managed to keep my secret and she didn't find out about the bottles until we arrived at the show the next day! So, now, she has 3 different small Hargis Pharmacy bottles and her friends are totally jealous because she has a pharmacy bottle with her name on it. As a side note, I have been watching trying to help locate a couple of her close friends bottles with their names on it, but I am finding that most of the bottles have initials on it.....ex. JM Tucker or even full names like William Tucker, etc. I have decided that because Modeste was a female (and the only female pharmacist in the state for a while) that she ONLY put the last name on her bottles so people wouldn't question if she was female! LOL So, we hit it lucky in that respect and the bottles just say Hargis Pharmacy with no first name or initials. I am currently searching for Compton or Thornton for one friend (she is marrying a Thornton in 2 weeks), Tucker for another and Hegi or Williams for a third. I thought it would make cute graduation gifts for them.......................they graduate in 2020.....not sure I am going to have much luck in locating them by then! But, I found I love the chase so to speak - so I am trying! LOL Sorry to be so off topic ....... BUT, since ya'll have such great researching techniques does anyone have any suggestions on how to locate whether old pharmacies existed with those names?? I found an old postcard that was from Northern Michigan (northport) that featured a gift shop and "Thornton Drugs" store was included in the postcard. I have reached out to several people trying to find out if that store had embossed bottles, but so far, I have not found anyone who knows. But, if not for the postcard, I would have no way to know it existed there. When I start googling - I end up with current pharmacists or towns with that name with pharmacies........if anyone has suggestions, feel free to message me as to not distract from the search for baby Keith! I tip my hat to you. Thanks!!

I will keep watching this thread as your story unfolds! And, by the way, is there not a photo of each DL that is registered?? I guess I just assumed they had to submit a photo but maybe all those aren't on line??? I don't really know anything about the registering process.

Genna - Wow, what an ordeal--and a lucky break!--on your bottle search. I had no idea so many people were in search of pharmacy bottles! (I could speak with my stepdad to see if he has any leads about Thornton Drugs, but he's a doctor, not a pharmacist, so I'm not sure if he would know. If he has leads, though, I'll be sure to pass them along via Tree-mail.)

As for pictures of registered daylilies goes, though, there are quite a few that don't have pictures. Today, it is standard practice (and possibly required?) to have a picture, but in the past it certainly wasn't required and many daylilies existed before personal cameras were common! Baby Keith was registered in the 1980's...back in the days of polaroid and film cameras, and not everyone had those. In fact, most or all of Primos' cultivars were registered without any pictures, sadly.

Thanks for that info............... wonder how many cultivars were registered early on with almost the same look. Was just thinking if they couldn't see pictures of previous cultivars there have to be a lot out there that are almost the same in appearance. Hadn't thought about the fact that early on in the registrations that they would not have had access to pictures of the previous registrations - so if they didn't grow it or know someone that did, they ONLY had the written description to go by. ...... enlightening...........

Good luck with the search!

@Char - I have to thank you again for pointing me in the direction of Ken Cobb. I have been so busy these last few weeks, but he has taken the charge and run with it, putting as much effort into finding Mildred Primos' cultivars as I have.

Unfortunately, he is running into the same lack of responses from contacts that I was. I'm not sure why no one is even responding to us, even if just to say 'sorry, I don't have the info you want.' It's very frustrating for me and I'm sure it's frustrating for him, too. :-/

You're welcome! It's to bad no one has responded to the requests for info. Seems strange there is no information about her cultivars.

Update:
I just received contact from Claudia Primos....she doesn't have any of the daylilies (including those named after her own children). Hopefully, though, she might be able to get a response from her family members to see if any of them kept any of the daylilies. Crossing Fingers!
