Heat is much worse, cold can be protected from, with heat there is NO escape!
I never staked anything but one peony ( Kinkaku - a tree peony with huge blooms) I just let the lilies lean on each other. They all did fine where there was enough wind and rain in the spring to make them develop a sturdy stem.
