I just picked my prize for 4th place. I selected the $25 gift cert from Victory Seeds. (To those still waiting I can tell you there are lots of great prizes still left, including most of the Crepe Myrtle's!)

Congrats to ALL the MANY winners. Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! I picked my 3rd place prize last night. One of those crepe myrtles. Hurray! I'm in the correct growing zone for it. Now to decide on the color. Confused

LOL, I just went through the list of winners and there is such cruel irony in the fact that too high of percentage of us Yankees, who live in areas not very friendly to growing crepe myrtles, ended up on the winners' list!

Thanks for letting us know where things are at, Rob !

That was the main reason I choose one Sandy. To save some of the other stuff for those in colder areas. Besides, I've never grown one before and I like to try new things.

Thank you for the acorns Sandy. Smiling

I made up my mind that If I won I'd choose a cm to leave the other prizes for those in colder zones. Was really impressed with what Dave received from this amazing company. Can't wait to get mine. Love dark foliage plants.

Dogsndaylilies, that's one of my seedlings. It's either not bloomed in the last two years or I lost it? Had many tags lost or faded. Crying Writing tags with pencils now, or China markers. The industrial sharpies they make these days fade away like the regular ones do. Thumbs down

Joy, how thoughtful! I hope everyone selects something they truly want. If I end up with a prize I can't use in my zone, I'm sure I can find a home for it further south. Hilarious! I sure wish I COULD grow one of those crepe myrtles, though. I have two wiegelas that are dying, and I've been looking for blooming shrub to take their places. If only our winters weren't so cold, one of those crepe myrtles would look lovely on the front corner of my house! They are stunning! Lovey dubby

@Joy - Aw, I'm so sorry to hear that! I seem to have a thing for purple daylilies and I thought yours was so unique with the reverse bi-tone coloring and the edging on the sepals but not the petals...and is that a dark midrib? What a special daylily. I hope it pops up again for you soon, it has a lot of unique characteristics! As for the crepe myrtle, they really are beautiful, and I can definitely relate to what you're saying about dark-colored foliage on plants--I really like that too! I hope yours is beautiful for you!

@BookerC1 - Are your wiegelas just getting old, or do you think the weather is getting to them? (I'm in zone 5b-ish and our Wine and Rose Wiegelas are going bonanzas! I'm going to have to trim them really well next year to keep them from taking over our little courtyard area out front!) As for the crepe myrtles...maybe we need someone to hybridize a cold-hardy crepe myrtle for us northerners, eh? Hilarious! (No, I'm not Canadian...but Michigan really isn't that far away, so I get to say "eh" occasionally!)

Thank you dogsndaylilies. I thought it was quite unique too. I'm really just hoping it was a lost or faded tag and for some reason took a couple years of rest . It's one of my favorite seedlings. Thought I might register this one if it was also a good plant. If it's still here. It's not exactly acting like a good one with no blooms for two years in a row. Might make a good bridge plant though.

Joy - I have had the same thing happen to one of my favorite daylily seedlings last year. I have no idea what happened to it and because I moved daylilies around that year, I lost track of it and hoped it would bloom this year to find it again. No blooms this year from it, so I do not know if it is still alive or not. It is a bummer! Sad

Someone told me to label daylilies with the plastic plant tape (I forget what it's called offhand, but I have some, maybe I'll look it up later) and grease pen (China marker) and bury it in the dirt so that if you lose your signs/labels or they become unreadable, you can dig up the buried tag and figure out what the plant was. It sounded like a pretty good idea to me, although I haven't gotten around to doing it yet. Whistling

I wonder who has the hot potato now...has it made it to you yet, Becky? Smiling

Libby - I changed my markers right after that happened to using knives and puffy paint. I haven't misplaced a plant label since. Wished I had done it before I moved plants around. (I even wrote an article about using the clear knives for markers.) A lot of people also bury plant labels under their plants, so that when they dig them up to divide or move them, they can verify which cultivar it is.

They are very old; we've lived here for 15 years, and they were obviously very old when we bought the place. The neighbor is guessing 30-40 years old? Also, I've had a mulberry tree growing up through the middle of one that I can't seem to get rid of, no matter what I do. I've even drilled down into several "trunks" after cutting the mulberry way down to about 12", and put brush killer in it. The mulberry keeps sending up new branches, and the wiegela is dying. Is there no justice?

A cold-hardy crepe myrtle would be lovely! Someone needs to get on that!

Haha!

Wow, that is one determined mulberry tree! Hilarious! I almost wish a mulberry tree would grow out of one of my wiegelas! I like having fruit-bearing trees in my yard (I am trying to follow a more sustainable/homestead sort of way of life as much as is reasonable)...although my wiegelas are out front and we don't want berry-colored bird poop staining our walkway out front Big Grin ...so if our wiegelas start giving birth to mulberry trees, they would probably have to be moved or murdered here, too. Thumbs down

@ Everyone else: Any takers on the cold-hardy crepe myrtle challenge? Big Grin
