I have at least 98% success sticking unrooted stems in pots with other plants already growing. I do a lot of that to save over winter. And in water.
Propagating something by itself in a pot isn't something I've done for probably 20 yrs but I did used to have some success with that. I got away from it because those things are too hard to water. What seems like is happening the last times I didn't like how it was going was the soil washes and shifts around, compacting. I'm not against it or saying anyone shouldn't do it, just saying why it seemed less reliable than my other 3 choices, water, already established pot, or in the ground during the right season. The latter is a moot point at this time of year for those in the N hemisphere.
