Hilary, it is disappointing to wait all year for the daylilies to bloom, and then to have them not perform well because of weather conditions. That stinks! Hopefully next year will be a completely different year for your blooms Smiling

I'm sorry your season didn't go well. It IS so disheartening. I'd love to hear more about your heuchera.

OMG. I've discovered iris! I'm researching plants for large perennial bed. Since the deer eat roses here I'm going to put in peonies and thought maybe iris would go well with them. Now I'm really in trouble. Luckily my 20th anniversary is coming next month. I usually ask for new "gardens" instead of jewelry for big anniversaries.

Not too bad despite the rain. I have 2 more open spots in the new bed and that is it.

Me too! Or atleast this year. I'm not a huge jewelry (or purse... or shoe....) person at all, so I usually ask for more practical things or gardening stuff. My husband doesn't realize how lucky he has it. Hilarious!

Kevin, where's the new bed going to be after you fill those two spaces?

Right on Joy!

I have a big L-shaped bed in back yard and new addition has made it into a horseshoe or kind of like one. The next addition will be off the other end and i will have the trellis just about boxed in except for about 8 feet of open space to access the inner plants. I have about 100 daylilys in it right now. There is a wisteria climbing the trellis i have had for 8 years and it always blooms.
The hard part is getting rid of the grass and some clay from any new garden space. I can only load my trash bin to 335lbs. and clay is heavy as you all know so i have a clay pile in the corner of the yard. I may have time to get started on taking some more grass off but thats it, just 2 more.
I am getting some real nice cultivars and i hate to crowd them to only see that the best plant won. I want all of them to have the same chance at growth as much as possible. However, i could always pot some up for next springs garage sale and make more space. Maybe the new neighbors would let me rent some space. There is a nice raised bed next door big enough for 8 plants for sure. Hmm.

Hi my name is Susie. I have an addiction to daylilies ! The daylily bug bit hard this spring when I needed to widen my existing daylily bed. No problem. I planted about 25 new plants. Then it hit. I needed more and then more, I replaced the bearded iris bed with daylilies and then put in a third bed. Overall I put in a little over 100 new plants this year. I need more room for the babies I have coming in the spring ! As well as the seedlings that I have growing under lights. My advice - stay away from the LA, AHS and cancel your membership to your local club. And stay away from any hybridizer friends as they are enablers Lol Maybe I could take some rows from the vegetables and consider digging up the roses......

Susie @Gardenbug01, you could always plant your veggies in pots like I do all ground space here is for flowers, except for the lawn. I only grow tomatoes, pepper, peas and green beans in pots which is plenty for us. You know roses are more work and have thorns, while daylilies make your heart sing! Hilarious!

We always encourage daylily addicts here it is a good addiction! Hurray! Lovey dubby Hurray!

We have 16 acres of heavily wooded land with the exception of one area that is the garden. It is approximately 5000 sq ft. Used to be mainly vegs but we have cut it back some over the years. Pots would not really work as I grow vegetables 12 months each year. Corn, potatoes and all the rest. This year I had cut the tomatoes back to 50 plants from 65. That's when I stole the row of corn to extend the daylilies. I have threatened my husband with planting the whole thing in daylilies or calling a logger . I mean wouldn't if be fun to extend this daylily bed all the way down ???

You sure have plenty of land even with some trees removed sounds like you would still have plenty of trees. I am not sure I would want to grow veggies year round, now flowers those I would love to grow year round.
