I wonder what causes an addiction to daylilies? Is it because there are just so darn many thousands of named cultivars? I can't figure out why I am addicted to daylilies instead of, oh, let's say roses. Or hostas, irises, or azaleas, or sempervivum. There are a lot of named cultivars of all of those.

And there are all kinds of other societies to belong to so it can't be because of just 'belonging' to a club. Coming home from a daylily club meeting with a couple more to plant just fuels the fire and the burning desire for next spring to arrive quickly so I can see them in bloom. But alas, every time the bloom season ends, and for me it is relatively short (like less than 12 weeks), I wonder why I wait so long for such a short time of joy.

Just Saturday, I dug out another patch of grass so I could add "just a few" more daylilies, sprayed the edge with roundup so the grass doesn't get too close to my new row, and hope that my husband doesn't notice until he mows lawn again, which will be in a few days, that he just lost another bit of real estate to some more daylilies.

Addiction? Guaranteed.

Vickie - Remind your husband that YOU are making his job easier by planting more garden area and removing grass so he has less to mow. You are thinking of HIM because you love him sooooooooo much! Whistling Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Thumbs up

Actually, if a tornado come through here and took some more trees down -I would have more room for dl. Hilarious! Alas dh will not let me take anymore real estate either... too many trees anyway... Plus I know I couldn't take care of any more. But the pull is so strong......... I made myself part with some this year so I could try new ones. My mom brought me some up from my old garden and I ordered some finally. Plus I joined the local dl club and wowie... they give me stuff, how can I say no to that? FREE? I can't say no to that... Rolling my eyes.

Becky, he has been pretty good about it all, but I am curious what he will say next time he mows, lol! I doubt very much that he would believe me if I told him I was doing it for him Rolling on the floor laughing

Frillylily, I did the same thing. I totally got rid of 9 daylilies this year to make room for newer ones. Isn't it great when freebies are given to you? You just can't say no! I have gotten so many this year. I didn't think it was possible to add so many to my garden, but I found spots for them.

I got a free DL Friday at our club meeting that one of the members remembered me mentioning on our spring local garden tour. Ashton bought one and if he had remembered to take money or a checkbook no telling how many he would have brought home since we had a plant auction. I am trying to slow down the purchases since we have about enough to make all shapes, colors and sizes of seedlings. Ashton thinks if sells one he can buy two. Or if he sells some sheep he can place a full order from a hybridizer. Not sure that all my work to teach the economics of business to my son for the past 10 years has paid off. Something about the daylily addiction for sure.

I have a lot of different plant addictions. Daylilies are my #1 addiction, But I'm also addicted to hostas, clematis, lilies, brugmansias and so many other perennial plants. In the spring, before the Daylilies bloom, I have lots of beautiful spring blooming plants to enjoy. Daylily season is a very exciting time for me. Like a kid waking up on Christmas morning, I go out each day excited to see all the fresh new Daylily blooms. For me, there's nothing quite like it. After the Daylilies are done for the year, I still have lots of other plants blooming. The oriental lilies, brugmansia and assorted other perennials continue showing off until first frost. My garden changes day by day, week to week. Always something beautiful to enjoy. I don't even get a chance to miss my daylilies blooming when I have so many blooms no matter what time it is in the growing season.

Joy, that is what I need to do... diversify more, lol! Right now, I have ageratum, beautyberry, winterberry, a few cosmos, 1 tithonia, and 1 zinnia blooming! Pretty much the rest of it is done, most of which is the daylilies. If I diversified more, I could have more blooming during spring and fall.

The first daylily I completely got rid of in my garden was Handsome Ross Carter. However, I gave it to my daughter, so I knew I could get it back if I wanted some. This summer, it has gotten easier to get rid of some of the daylilies that I found I just didn't like as much, but I still have more than I started out at the beginning of the year!

The perennials putting on a late show in my garden are sedums, roses (especially Morden's Blush), rudbeckia, Japanese anemone, and the huge bottle brush flowers of actaea (formerly cimicifuga). There is also colour left on the phlox, and echinacea, too.

We like everything with flowers. We grow shrubs and trees like crepe myrtles, vitex or chaste trees, and desert willows. We also grow a few roses but over past years have had to eliminate almost all due to rose rosette disease. The lantana grows like crazy here and will spread 8 feet and grow 6 foot tall and bloom until frost. We still have a couple of reblooming daylilies. Sage and salvia grow well and bloom all summer. Still we have a few thousand daylilies and a few hundered other plants.

Hello, my name is Stan and I'm an addict, but my mother is the enabler... Rolling on the floor laughing

It seems the other day, she was chatting with the local grower we usually buy from. She found out the lady is down sizing due to arthritis in her hands. So, a lot of her older daylily's need a new home. The enabler (aka. Mother) told her that I would take all she was getting rid of. She only has some 1100+ CVs. Of course I said yes. Whistling

Way to go, Stan! I'm having a hard time not bidding on some on the Lily Auction AND I've printed out an order for Maryott's three times and then was able to tear them up rather than send them. I'll be glad when the 30th gets here and they're not shipping anymore.
