Tree peony's are a magnificent plant. The alkaline in them is poisonous to animals as all alkaline plants. The deer seem to know that…that's is why the peony's have lasted for years. Even the horses don't even look at them when standing at their post right in front of the peony's.

Bea, how do people tolerate peonies? People make peony wine. I should learn more about how peonies were used in medicine. Any good article on this?

I would imagine it would take gobs of blooms to make peony wine.Not sure how, maybe boil the heck out of them and add alcohol and let it sit in sealed containers for weeks.
Now I'm curious how peony wine is made. It's like digitalis 'foxglove' is poisonous and I have loads of that in my garden. It's also used as a medicine . I haven't had any handling issues .Well when ya think about it practicality everything in the garden is poisonous. There are a few exceptions .

I've heard of dandelion wine, never made it , and I have gobs of those. Also many weeds and flowers are eatable but never heard of peoney wine.

Vancouver Island is a beautiful island. A trip back in time to England…
Got my attention Vancouver Island British Columbia is a hop skip and a jump away from here. We can take the auto ferries across to the Island. We used to go to so many gardens in Washington. There was a fantastic nursery in Wa. I would go up there and get all kinds of in usual plants collected by two hort pros that traveled around the world for new plants. Heronswood Garden is in Kingston Wa. It was heronswood nursery in the 90's. Refurbished Gardens by a local organization and open for tours. It is amazing. It was a really super speciality nursery. Nothin like it around today.
A big seed company bought them out .
It was so cool to read their catalogues. Each plant had a history of their travels and how when and where they found the plants and brought them back. It was a great time to be a hort head and so many amazing nurseries in the 90's.
Will look into Peonies by Carol. For the heads up.

Lucky you to be able to tour Heronswood Nursery. I used to get their catalog. Dan Hinkley has moved to the UK I believe.

I do see plants introduced as 'Dan Hinkley Collection' plants.

I just read an interview with Dan Hinkley in the July/August 2022 issue of Horticulture magazine. He talks about Heronswood and how it came about. Sounds like he and his spouse live near Heronwood in a new place they've built. There's a book out that he wrote about building their current garden, Windcliff: A Story of People, Plants, and Gardens.

Val …Great review on his new book. A great winter read. I still have all his catalogues. So many amazing stories about where each plant was found . Both of his gardens are beautiful . Also see gardens via utube .
