If I have a ton of seeds of something, I plant 2 or more per cell if I question germination. With few seeds and/or if I know germination should be good, one per cell.

In the basement will work if you have some grow lights. That temp is low for tropicals. You might want to buy a heat mat.

I start hundreds of seeds in Feb - Apr in my basement.

The Brugs likely won't bloom til 2017 anyway, so there is no big rush. And your outdoor growing season is so short.

Thank You! davidmo yes i have Heat mats & also I have the lights so ecited to try these for i have never grown from seeds before.
One last Q:
do you need to maybe soak the seed then plant in soil , or just put in seed starter mix ?

You need to soak the seed for at least 2 days I add a little Hydrogen peroxide to the water very little helps with the coat and gives a little oxygen.Starter mix cold dam not good you want a fast draining soil keep moist not wet.

Like you said david these are tropicals cool temps and wet heavy soil is a recipe for fungus and death. Seed starter mix is light quick draining a must now this is my rule others can chime in here with there with there method.

OK mkb136 - got ya. I totally agree. I ONLY use seed staring media for ALL my seeds. Once they get big enough to pot up, I then use one of my potting soil mixes.

A little true story. When I was first starting with planting seeds, I did not know which end was up. Smiling Ordered some packets from Parks, went out and dug up some garden soil and pain stakingly planted my seeds - sorted by size, tossed out the puny ones etc. Placed them on a screened breezeway. And waited. GERMINATION! Yay. And like 24 hours later, every freaking one fell over. And perished. I learned the hard way about Damping Off and had done EVERYTHING wrong - bad soil, slow drainage, too wet, too cool, etc. Smiling

Susie, you really do need to keep the seeds warm - above 70 - so they will germinate, then keep the seedlings warm too, until they are big enough to pot up. Even then, I'd be hesitant to keep them in a cold basement.

These are tropical plants! Keeping a big, established plant dormant through winter in a cool basement is very different to keeping seedlings going. They would surely die if you let them get too cold for too long.

Do you have a windowsill upstairs where you can keep them warm and in the sun?

I have seedlings that are over a foot tall right now. They were started this spring. I'll be keeping them in a sunny spot, above 60deg. at night through this winter, and expect them to bloom by next summer.

Elaine is right about the seedlings, Perhaps I mis-remembered or got threads confused. I thought once they became seedlings you planned to move them to a windowsill.

Anyway - unless you heat the basement - 50-60 is too cold for Brug seedlings to do well. You can certainly start the seeds there if you have a heat mat. But once they germinate, to do well they need a warmer area.

Hello all, I love this site alot better then another one I belonged to for like 13 years. Grumbling
I was wondering how I would I get started in growing Brugs? All I had before rotted etc with is cuttings. But have learned since then. But have not tried my had at Brug seeds? Is there a good person to buy them from or a better place. I tried my hand at buying a seeding off eBay and a plant store but those did not make it either! But like I said I have learned so much more now.
Hurray!
Thanks for all you help, just by reading your thread?

Lisa, Brugs are easy to start either from seeds or from cuttings but you will get a blooming size plant a lot quicker from a cutting. They root readily in water, then just pot them up and treat like a house plant until your night time temperatures will be dependably above 50deg. or so.

Lots of people would send you a cutting for the cost of the postage. Mine are presently all fairly new so I don't have any cuttings to send you. Maybe next year I will have some to share.

Thumbs down Elaine I am a grower here in Lakeland I used to buy quite a bit but here any more way to much disease for me to pay 50 dollars to have plants arrive with dark spots on the stalks. People buying all these seeds from growers if the plants are sick the seeds are too. No one seems to address this problem I am sick of it. I am crossing here no sickness if a plant looks iffy burn pile. Jt knows what I am talking about. I saw sick plants on ebay every body buying them up knowing no better. If I pay 50 for what I want and it comes and is sick I trash the plant. Oh well if you have a plant with dark nodes and or leaf nodes destroy the plant. Don't spread this cracking on the stalk scrap it!! It will spread to your good plants then you will have a bone fire lol or you should. I am doing my own crosses of healthy plants not sick.. Sorry for the rank but just bought cuttings from ebay old time seller from bgi sick sick pissed me off. How dare you sell sick crap there I sell there too but not that crap. If you recive a plant like this return it!!!!

That's exactly the reason why most of mine are new plants this year.

I had the fusarium infection (cracking stems) here bigtime, on three wonderful old plants and I trashed them all. So far this year there's no sign of any recurrence on new plants in new soil in clean pots. Let's hope!

Lisa, that's a caution for you if you do get cuttings from anyone. Please be sure and ask if they've had any problems with the stems on their plants showing cracks, as it is a sign of this disease.

The seedlings I've started are all fine so far, too. They were seeds from the diseased plants but I've kept them separated from the other new plants. Are you SURE that the disease passes on through seeds? That's very rare in most plants.

My seedlings are 18in. tall now, and still looking healthy, thankfully.

Maybe some diseases pass through via seed, and others don't?
