Apparently the rooted cuttings eventually do develop a caudex but it takes a long time.
The best way to propagate named varieties is by grafting them on to seedling stock. This is how it's done 99% of the time in the trade.

@ardesia
Adenium cuttings do not grow caudexes above ground, but eventually the trunk does thicken appreciably over time. This one is about 31 years old.

That is impressive @Rainbow
Well done. I hope my babies Will reach that age one day. So If you want s fat caudex you have to start from seedlings or graft them. Wich seems rather difficult to me. It is Only to bad that seed does not come true to plant.
Shrug!

Thank you, Adeniumgirl!

Yes, starting from seed is best for growing fat caudexes. There are reputable seed vendors that do sell seeds that pretty nearly have all the characterics of the mother plant. I hear Ko and Rinoa are two of them. They also have grafted plants for sale...I acquired 10 from Rinoa. If you like really fat caudexes, then A. arabicums are super. The flowers, though, are only secondary to the beauty of the tree's form.

Happy growing! Thumbs up

Thanks, Gigi @GigiPlumeria! Speaking of "Gigi", the bonsai candidate...I still have not decided on the form to give her. Sighing!

Thank you Hetty and Rainbow for your excellent explanations. Tomorrow I'll take a picture of my rescue adenium, it has the ugliest graft you will ever see. I had picked it up at the Lowe's "left for dead" rack. Then the poor thing was outside during some unprecedented rain. We were away and by the time I got home and rescued it again the caudex had swollen and split.

I love those flowers, KD, especially that crimson one. I can't wait for some of mine to show signs of budding.

They're all gorgeous, but that crimson one is my favorite! I think you have the perfect growing climate for them, KD., plus lots of patience and attention to detail. You're a great plant mom.
