Y'all are much warmer there than we are in NE Mississippi, Donald. We are headed back into the mid-20's and have already had numerous 20's and even a couple of upper teens.

@needrain I like to get the hoops down as soon as possible. That's usually a bad idea, since we have one late freeze. I hope I don't get complacent, think I'm safe this year, and pull everything out. (I know I will!).

From what you said, we are way, way colder than you this fall/winter. I think we have been hit with every polar front so far.

I get anxious to get things out every spring. Then that causes one or two rushes to cram everything back inside. Happens every year!

Sorry Ken! But maybe on the things that live outside year 'round will be better off and wait 'til danger is past before they decide to green up. Think of the peaches! You do have those, don't you?

We have had spring-like weather and it is hard to think that February, some of our coldest temps in TX might be on it's way. El Nino might have a say in that. I have pulled out some plants out of the greenhouse but ready to move them right back in if I need to. Some sit on the side of the greenhouse in the sun and never made it in.

I don't grow peaches or any other fruit tree, but there are peach orchards in the area.

I wasn't clear. I meant in the area. They have bloomed too early here for so long, it's a real treat in the years when they manage to set fruit. There used to be a lot more orchards and individual trees in yards than there are now. Folks have just given up trying. Drought and bad timing on the freezes is discouraging, not to mention the all-too-frequent hail storms and ever-present insects.

The weather guys always jinx the peach crops. They brag about the great crop coming in from Fredericksburg. Within the month, there's either a freezer a hail storm. Not infrequently, but nearly every year!

Here too, now. But it wasn't like that here when I was growing up. Nearly everyone had a peach tree or two in their yard and there were small peach orchards everywhere. Even some at old abandoned homes that were all grown up with weeds. I guess I'm talking about the good old days.

The good news is that Hawaii will always be there @Bubbles. I think if you would have gone, DH would have missed out on a lot of fun things as his ankle would not have been strong enough for some of the naturally rough terrain on Kauai. It's pretty natural. Make plans for Vacation 2016. There will be some good deals out there! I hope to go to Hawaii for work again in February. I'm putting in for it. We'll see! I am craving some warm Island time!

This is my first winter in Houston. I'm happy that we haven't dipped below 32 yet, but also concerned about a late freeze. I have Triumphator lilies that are 3 to 4 inches high already. I would sure hate to lose them!

@SALL20 You can cover them with some frost cloth/row cloth or an old sheet when it's in the 30s. Lower than that, you may need to add some old Christman lights under the covers. We will have some more cold weather before spring. You just have to be vigilant! @ShadyGreenThumb can probably give you a few suggestions too. She's in your area.

It's going to be in the 70s here. I noticed the paper whites are trying to bloom. I had about five that tried to bloom at Christmas. The blooms were just stuck and dried that way.

Snow flurries here. Nothing will stick though. Cold and blustery. Thumbs down

The weather people missed it last night. Predicted 30F turned out to be 24F officially. I don't think it got quite to 24F here, but 26F or 27F for sure. I'd have moved a couple of things in for the night at those temps. They'll probably be okay, but....

That's quite a difference in their prediction. Hope you don't lose anything to the freeze.
I'm going to open the hoops and let the plants breathe some fresh air today!

I looked at the extended weather temps through Mid March. For Houston area, it shows no freezes! It could be that we might end up with a mild winter! LOVE IT! Still, the Tropicals prefer the warm temps of the greenhouse as they are not fond for 40 degrees. Some even balk at 50 degrees. The sun has been shining so nicely lately I am ever so tempted to remove a few things from the GH. I do this when I get itchy for spring. Better not.....

@SALL20 I am up in Kingwood. There are many trees here that help protect my garden plants. We are on the border of Montgomery County where it gets a few degrees colder. But the trees insulate us from the very cold. It seems to get colder in the wide open spaces cwho are void of trees.

I have some Asiatic lilies that are coming up nicely near the Easter Lilies. Typically, they start greening up this time of year. They never seemed to be hurt from frost but they are situated under a tree. I don't think you have to worry about them.

Yes, too much difference. I think everything will be alright. Some seedling plants and plants in smaller containers that I tend to be more protective of, but they will probably be just fine. Sometimes it's the container rather than the plant. If the freeze is too hard, I end up with a busted container. I just spent way too much $$$$ last week to get a couple of freeze resistant containers for a couple of native cactus whose containers have disintegrated from freezes. The plants can handle a lot of cold temp, but the containers didn't. They were old and have been flaking and developing hair-line cracks for a few years. Hopefully the high $$$$ jobs will hold up for my lifetime.
