Steve812. Let's rule out the "critters" that would have nothing to do with chewing rose bushes to the ground. Right off the bat, Squirrels, Chipmunks and Rabbits and Racoons. Not possible, not normal, have never witnessed it! Now about the probable "critters". Definitely, Deer are at the top of the list, particularly out where you are. Deer do not have upper teeth, so when they eat a plant, they "mash" it, not a clean cut. AND THEY LOVE ROSE BUSHES! The odd time when they get on my property, they always go for the rose bushes! Always. The other possibility is your "javelin"? I Googled it and it seems as though it is akin to a Wild Boar. I don't know if Javelins eat roses? You can make a note to look for tracks, spat, near your rose bush? Cheers.
