Tracey, I just hope that when you buy them they turn out as pretty. Buy from a reputable grower.
I just can't wait to see these a few years from now in my garden.

I don't buy from anybody but the growers.... So no worries on that. Don't do tissue culture peonies either.

Been looking around for a couple intersectionals. A couple of the Sonomas have been calling me. It might just be the year... A dead tree means more sun...sad to see it go but more room for gardens.. Lilies peonies!

LG, 'New Millennium' is gorgeous! Thanks to your beautiful picture, it's now on my "Wants" list.

I took a stroll around my garden today, it's a new nice, sunny 68 degree day. I noticed my 'Shining Light' is starting to grow.

Tracey I figured you have learned your lessons the hard way like I have about whom to buy peonies from. Nothing irks me more than to have something not bloom true to name.
Annette, I have 'Shining Light', too and love it!
Here is the photo of 'Pastel Splendor's' root I just planted. It was a double division for $65., and I believe I got my money's worth. I counted 21 eyes on it.

I also recall a grower speaking about Monrovia and tissue culture intersectional peonies. The method for peonies is very debated among true peony growers as well as enthusiasts.

Interesting anyway....as far as I know they still practice this today.

Hi Tracey,
Unfortunately the casual gardener seems to want to buy blooming peony plants rather than bare root divisions.
I don't believe that most of them are given proper planting instructions and wonder why the plants fail to thrive.
The nice thing about Intersectionals here in the South is that the blooms open. I have never had an Intersectional peony ball on me.

Me neither up here. They open way up and the ones like Julia Rose do that wonderful fade out thing.

About the list of comparisons above. It seems like a person would want to know what size they are selling. Some sell 3-5 bud, other 2, and some just don't say. I suppose you have to figure that reputable sellers are dependable but not always. they are also at the mercy of weather so while they usually have robust multi-eyed roots, maybe not always.

I saw an ad for Itoh peonies and thought the prices were completely unrealistic. The ads were from Michigan Bulb and Spring Hill, neither of which are known for correct plants or true to name plants. Also, K. van Bourgondien had 'Garden Treasure' for $20.63. I checked other vendors and Hollingsworth was $64, Klehm $85, Adelman $60, and HSFF $65. KVB is a supplier to some big box stores and anything with that name should be suspect. Even 'Bartzella' was under $30. Remember the old carnival barker saying "You pays your money and you takes your chances."

They're just teeny divisions, seem healthy enough. I've purchased some through both companies and what you get for the money is fair. Yes, you can buy them from the big growers and probably get blooms the next spring or buy several different varieties of the small ones and wait a few more years. I do both! The thing that MB, SH and KvB have that the big growers don't is a grow or money back guarantee. I also impulse buy the bagged varieties at Walmart and Sams, I just make sure the labeling reflects where they came from so I'm not surprised if they turn out to be something different than from what was pictured.

The thing about wrong or bad plants is it may take a couple years or more to see the mistake. The odds for correct plants from major growers are much better than those from brokers and that is essentially what SH, MB, KVB, and Brecks are. My first clue was their telephone numbers all were for the same office building. I spent many years in telecommunications equipment work so little things like that catch my eye. I think they are all owned by the same holding company. KVD may be an exception.

Corrected KVB.

I checked their contact numbers and Brecks is (513) 354-1511. Spring Hill is (513) 354-1510. MB and KVB now have different numbers. In years past, I purchased many plants from Brecks, MB, and SH when they had almost consecutive phone numbers and all their catalogs had the same customer number. Since then, there was a consolidation with many nursery companies and the sales structure may have changed.

If you have an Aldi's near you, check out their Sarah Bernhardt and Karl Rosenfield peonies for $1.69. I bought all but one package they had at mine. That one had zero eyes. They are tiny divisions, but it will be amusing to see what finally blooms in 3-4 years. And hey, all bouquets need filler flowers. I have plenty of room for experiments. Lovey dubby
Here's 4 of them. All worth planting.
