Wouldn't be a shabby addition to my collection either.

They are gone and it was a big success. MGers love different and strange plants so they loved it here. Now to take my wife to the airport and then choir practice. I'm at the half way mark.

I bought the other day a Phrag pearcei in spike from Pipingrockorchids. Now we had seen them in Ecuador growing on a riverbank, which gets totally flooded every so often to the point that they are totally submerged.

I took the plant home and placed it at the back of the aquarium pump. I certainly won't take credit for this beautiful bloom, but I am happy I didn't kill the bud. Perhaps that might be a good way to grow this plant outside too, since I will now have to invest in a pump for our pond because of this Goldfish.....

Hmm, the name Village Chief doesn't ring any bells, but . . it's years since I've seen that tag. I wonder if it would be helpful to post some of the pictures from previous blooms when it was showing much more orange/gold shading on the petals/sepals?

I'm embarrassed that I made you post my picture, Ursula since it turns out I belong to that group as well. I stopped the updates a while ago since there were so many, I couldn't find my family and friends amongst all the wonderful flowers.

I'll see if I can remember how and will dig up some previous pictures.

In the beginning I didn't do that and couldn't find any of my friends amongst the very many beautiful Orchid pictures. The more numerous Orchid posters simply drowned out the rest.

This is Phal. Sogo 'Vivians'. She's a sub-compact grower and seems to love her cork home.

Ursula, your new Phrag pearcei is gorgeous ...I don't think I've ever seen one ( a Phrag.) in person and didn't
realize what the foliage or plant form looked like..thanks for posting the full view as well...It's quite pretty with
the graceful leaves.

Though some folks don't seem to like cork mounts, I love using cork. It is too bad I have to purchase it.

Lindsey, my other Phrags are far away in size and appearance from this little beauty. I have Phrag schlimii, which is also smallish, but the others are fairly large robust plants.

And there is the C. Tropical Pointer 'Cheetah' with another spike. This one flowers several times a year.

I love spotted orchids, Ursula. That's a beauty for sure.

Ken, why don't people like cork mounts?..I personally don't have any of my plants
mounted because of my lifestyle...but it seems if you were the kind of person that
liked mounted plants you would go for the cork...it doesn't break down like bark ..correct?
It has a beautiful texture and is very natural looking , in my opinion.

Lindsey, the only real disadvantage to cork mounting (or any mount for that matter) is that they do dry out faster than an orchid in a pot. This is a great thing for Florida (I think) because of our abundant heavy rain in the summer. But probably for people growing a few orchids indoors, a clay or other pot is better because it makes the plant lower maintenance. Can't put an automatic mist system in your kitchen for them, right?

I'm moving more and more of my plants to either slat baskets or cork mounts because even in the cooler, dry months my Vandas get watered every day, and I can put the mounted plants with the Vandas, since they dry out so well. Just about all my Brassies are on cork now.

I have automatic misting set up so I don't have to worry if I'm away. One section gets watered every day, and another gets every 3rd day. This seems to be working well for me.

For me at least, using practically all mesh-pots, watering frequency is about the same. IF I were using solid plastic or even clay, watering would be less.

You are absolutely right, Lindsey. Cork is incredibly light (other than some of the extra-thick slabs I have which is very heavy), resists fungi and algae, has more "toe-holds per inch than any other mounting wood, and will never rot.............never. I have a couple of mounted plants that have been on cork for ten years and the cork looks the same as the day I mounted them. I don't know why some people (here on ATP) say they just don't like cork. Perhaps its the texture or perhaps they perceive that it dries out more quickly than other woods. The woods I use, and I use approximately a dozen varieties, all dry out quickly and the difference in their drying-time and cork is inconsequential, at least in my opinion.
