Dave, would it be possible (or more precisely practical) to be able to sort our personal plant lists by status (have, want, used to have) and then by specific category? For example, I am working on updating my list over the winter, and I'm trying to work with manageable lists -- I tried clicking on only showing me 'haves' and then clicking one of my categories (trees) but then all of my trees came up - haves, wants, and used to haves. I do see that I am able to click 'haves' and then a specific genus, but that is a bit too narrow. I get that many folks use the category feature in different ways, but perhaps there could be a drop list for our individual categories, similar to the drop list for genus? Or perhaps you could wave your magic wand and otherwise allow a double criteria search?

If not, just choosing trees is workable, I can easily skip over my wants and used to haves.

It's possible and I can do it, but I'm not sure how soon. I have a lot of important things I'm working on today and then it's thanksgiving weekend, so we'll just have to see. If I don't get to this within a week bump this thread.

I am always amazed by Dave's quick response time, really amazing. I am content with the selections the way they are, but I understand people use things in different ways and being able to request changes, and get a positive reply and an estimated time line for actual action is still very impressive to me. Thank you Dave for this site!

@Dave I have now reached the 'magic' number of over 500 'haves' which would make a dual search even more attractive. I think many folks would like to search by 'have' and then by whatever their personal categories are. I have mine set up as type of plant and often work with just my natives, or mainly perennials, etc. I know others set their categories to specific gardens, or other criteria.

If that is not on the drawing board, could you give me a tip on how to best sort through my now longish 'have' list? Here's where I get lost -- I first limit the search to have, then I hit Ctrl-F and type in the first 4-5 letters of whatever I'm trying to find. This brings up plants meeting that search. After arrowing down through that narrowed list, I may then need to go to page 2 of my list to continue the search. It seems at that point I have to go back to the main list, go to page 2, and re-start another search. Is there a quicker way to do this that I'm missing?

Or, can we have a longer list than 500? Would that slow things down or otherwise negatively impact things? Thanks.

I think for now the solution is in how you set up your categories. Then do your searches by category. I only have 362 plants in my have list but I seldom have a need to search that. My most searched categories are my "Named Cultivar Daylilies" , "Daylilies on Order", and "Daylily Want List". I am not sure that is of any help, but I have found searching by category to be my best way.

You could have a category for "Trees I Have", another for "Trees I Want" , "Trees That Grow Over Twenty Feet Tall" etc.

I currently have my categories all set up for type of plant, and I do limit my searches for that, but then I get not only my haves, but also my used to haves, and wanteds which can be distracting. At this juncture, I guess I could create a new category for 'Dead Plants' and recategorize all my 'Used to Have' to that so they don't pop up in a search. That could be a work-around. I don't use the 'want' category much, except for plants my sister has that I want her to chunk out for me (she can just open my plant list, look at the wants, and see what is mature enough for sharing). Otherwise, I keep an ongoing Word file called "Plant Wish List" that I print out when going to the nursery. I do recognize that Dave can't customize everything to suit everybody, along with making new features work for all the different platforms. I'm old school and just use a PC, no tablet or phone.

If you set up a category for "Trees I have" a check box will be created for category "Trees I have" when you enter a tree you check that box and then only trees you have will be included in your search when you search by category "Trees I have". Does that make sense? You can do the same for something like "Plants I had" etc.

Making extensive use of the categories system is the best way that I can think of. We also automatically get our lists grouped into genera, which can be helpful.

After that, I can't even begin to think of what else could make it easier for sorting through it. I'd be open to ideas.

I don't use the 'Want' check off, rather, I made a separate category for my wish list so I can keep them by themselves. I didn't want my rose or Iris wish list mixed in with my inventory. If you create a separate 'Used to Have' or whatever you want to call it category, it's easy to just check that and uncheck its prior category.

It seems counter-intuitive to me to create categories that duplicate the main sorting mechanism (Have, Used to Have, Want) but if that's the work-around I can do that. Just seemed that since we have a drop-down menu for choosing a specific genus (which I've never had occasion to use, but I'm sure the folks who are tuned into a specific plant likely do), a similar secondary sort for category would make sense. I am not a programmer, though, and will just go with whatever happens.
