This is crazy! Rain all day here. No more snow on the ground! Hope this doesn't mess up any lily bulbs!

at my farm it rained pretty much non stop for 9 months, lilies do wonderful there. where I am now it has been hell frozen over for weeks, it only lets up a bit for more snow, wish I could trade it all to you for your rain!!!!!
I prefer my precipitation in a form that doesn't need to be shoveled.

For those with more lily experience, and especially Tracey and Lorn, being closest to me. Could the lily bulbs break dormancy with this weather? Namely the rain and over 40 degrees?

Nope. Not a chance. A few warm days is not going to change the soil temperature at bulb level by more than a couple tenths of a degree or so. There are some very interesting technical reasons for this we can discuss over coffee sometime. In addition, lily bulbs themselves don't react and respond quick enough to appreciate any brief increase. I've done a lot of study work over the years collecting data from my own gardens here.

Even so, there's a lot going on inside bulb right now. And one of them has to do with bud formation and bud counts. While a bulb may not respond immediately to the slightest temperature increase, it may react to it and show it in different ways the following blooming season. Crossing Fingers!

Bulbs are smarter than you think. It takes more than a couple of warming days to get things going. Even in real spring weather, I look around wondering why certain lilies aren't up yet. It's a bit of a different story if we were to have several days of 80 degree days right now. That might be enough to be worried, but 40s? We are ok.

That said, January is typically the coldest nastiest month of our year here. Temperatures are miserable and there is snow. So it's been strange. Yes.
