I've been pulling weeds and cutting spent scapes in my daylily boxes. Often I will hear this soft chirp underground and I think I know what it is, maybe. In the fall and winter I see garden toads (probably Southern Toads) as I remove plants and add soil to the boxes. This is the first year I've heard chirping as I slightly disturb the soil.

I'm beachside in the Daytona area and it's been rather cool for the last few days, if that makes a difference.

What do you think? Is it Cuban tree frogs or garden toads????? Inquiring minds want to know.

Hm, Cuban tree frogs aren't usually underground, I don't think. More likely the southern toads, but I really think unless you actually see one you'll never know.

Might also be moles or pocket gophers. Seen any entry holes nearby? Piles of dirt or "trails" ?

No trails or piles of soil. I have voles in the sand but nothing like that in the raised boxes. I haven't seen anything lately either. That's why I don't know what I have. The chirping is sweet, soft and limited.

There is a mole cricket that burrows and they have the sound for it, maybe that is what you're hearing?

Cool!! Enjoyed listening to the sounds, but none are similar to what I hear.

One of the chirping critters appeared as I was planting seeds in a raised vegetable box. The toad didn't appreciate my attention when I came back with a camera so this is the only picture I got. I will see them as I work in the raised beds in the coming weeks. Sometimes I dig them up.
