I doubt that would work until the flower are done or near done. Regular people don't care about names: they just want pretty.
Funny this came up, because just yesterday I identified a plant that my friend's wife had. She thought it was Virginia bluebells (and she had actually brought it back from her sister's garden in Virginia a decade ago). She showed it to the master gardeners who volunteer at our arboretum and they couldn't ID it.
It was comfrey. So when my friend broke the news to the wife, she was kinda dismayed. Then she proclaimed that she was going to call it Virginia bluebells anyway.
