Husband planted lily bulbs about 5 years ago. It grows to about 3 ft. tall and has bloomed every year, just one bloom. Suddenly this year the lily has grown to a height of well over 5 ft. and has 12 bloom pods starting to open. What has caused this?
I would guess that either it took them this long to get established or something happened differently last year that allowed them to grow larger bulbs and then produce larger stems this year. If there was a step change this year you need to look back to last year and think about what might have been different for last year from previous years? Did they get more fertilizer last year? Was it a better growing season? Did you remove some branches from trees that were shading the area? Did you get more water/rain last summer? Did you mulch them last year and hadn't years prior? For the plants to produce bigger flower stems they had bigger bulbs produced by better growth the previous year.
