Are there any plans to expand the Plant Database further into applicable Recipes and Uses? Currently, we have numerous recipe threads scattered throughout the forums.. . If we had some way to store the recipes & uses, we could reduce the number of threads getting lost.

For example, let's say we have an interesting dish idea submitted...

Malabar Spinach Gumbo
    Celery
    Carrots
    White or Brown Onions
    Shellfish Stock
    Cayenne Pepper'
    Malabar Spinach
    Rice
    Garlic
    Salt & Pepper
Someone may be looking at Malabar Spinach, wondering how they might use it. Someone else may be looking at Cayenne Pepper and scratching their head for ideas on how to utilize them. If the Plant Database had connectivity to something like NGA Recipes & Applications, both of these users would see a link to Malabar Spinach Gumbo. Conversely, if someone was interested in a dish, they could see links specifically to the plants involved in that dish. We could further have user-submitted & approved usages, such as first-aid (primitive bandaging, antiseptics, tonics), or cordage, insulation, primitive thatching, etc..... some plants are absolutely life-saving, with uses yet to be discovered.

The central feature of the site seems to be its Plant Database. If it also had a Recipe database attached, it would draw more members from culinary backgrounds. If it had a database on uses of plants (first-aid, cosmetics, etc.), it would draw in more naturalists.. though I think recipes demonstrate a more immediately recognizable connection between plants and human use.

Is there a better way to handle submitted recipes and uses than random threads?

I do see the above idea has merit. I can also say that with certainty people look. Although my thread is in The Garden Photos Forum, I do post recipes and pictures. I only give my recipes that I created. They generate conversation and replies. The one that generated the most conversation was my picture and the recipe that I had to send them to another site to get. Due to copyright issues I could not give that recipe. Some places will allow you to if you credit them, but not many. People try to circumvent the copyright by changing two ingredients. A 1/2 teaspoon of salt and pepper become season to taste. They rewrite the directions. If the original recipe was for 4 servings, they write the recipe for 2 servings. Is it legal? Shrug! As long as no one challenges them. Recipes could be a big police department with a lot of copyright checking. I do not think it is as easy as it sounds.

May everyone have a wonderful week!

It's funny that you mention this because just a few days ago @Trish was in my office promoting her idea that we should make a place for recipes on garden.org. It's on my TODO to give thought to the best way that we might accomplish this!

so would this just involve recipes for eating, or recipes for soap, lotions, or herbal uses or teas or such.
I see a can of worms here of trying to figure out where to 'end' it, and what may be one man's idea of a good idea is another man's idea of poison. Here take this herb to cure your ails! There has to be a way to sort it all somehow. Shrug!

Perhaps something similar to 'tagging' landscape photos. I'd utilize both eating recipes and herbal lotions/potions.

Okay, how about this.. we keep it simple (KIS).. just associate thread to plant database.

New Function: Associate Thread/Discussion
    Step One
Please indicate Plant to which this thread association is proposed. (Up to X Plants Only, please).
+ Click to Add another Plant
    Confirm/Cancel
    Step Two
Food Recipe - Thread pertains to plant application for food purposes
Landscaping - Thread primarily addresses landscaping or related application of this plant
Usage - Thread primarily addresses non-food application of the plant
    Confirm/Back Up
    Step Three
Please upload or input applicable photos
Please provide comments/links to assist with moderator review.
    Confirm/Back Up
    Summary Page
Thread ID 12345 "Malabar Spinach Gumbo" will be associated as Recipe with:
    Plant ID 12345 Malabar Spinach
    Plant ID 12346 Cayenne Pepper
Please Review Submission. Do you want to proceed?
    Confirm/Backup/Cancel
So now, under Plant Database, if we look up Malabar Spinach, we would see:

Recipes for Malabar Spinach:

Malabar Spinach Gumbo - 55 Likes - Click Here
    (thumbnails shown)
    Angie's Deep-Fried Calamari Malibari - 88 Likes - Click Here
    (thumbnails shown)
Landscaping:

Bamboo Gazebo & Reception Area feat. Malabar Spinach & Vine Jelly & Citronella Tiki Torches - 121 Likes -Click Here
    (thumbnails shown)
Usages:

Aloe Vera & Malabar Spinach Poultice- 31 Likes - Click here
    (thumbnails shown)
Joe's Malabar Gardening Rope - 75 Likes - Click here
    (thumbnails shown)

Make sense? Some degree of IT hours involved, but no need to completely revamp or add new databases... trying to work with what we have. Mission to promote Healthy Living & Environmental Awareness is upheld and expanded into various natural applications. Can just start practical only doing one general "Recipes & Uses" Category.
