Ok, sorry for no pics. Maybe if I remember. I knew I had an old, neglected lump of crinum in a corner of my yard. But since I just really started admiring the bulbs, I never paid attention to it. It was under an elm tree that's grown rather large since the bulbs under it were evidently planted. I finally noticed a foot in diameter clump of shoots growing up out of the area within the past couple of weeks. This weekend, I decided to dig into them. There wasn't one large bulb but several slightly larger-than-golfball sized bulbs underneath with thick white root hairs. Pretty sure it's the crinum as I noticed my mother's crinum were also shooting up recently. I replanted in a sunny spot. But, just to confirm, does anyone else have crinum sprouting this time of year? Im zone 8b in NW Louisiana.

Bkrell ~ I am located about 100 miles south of Shreveport in deep east TX along the LA border. My Crinums have had green foliage all summer and with the killing freeze this past week, the foliage has all died back.

In my experience, the Crinum bulbs are going to be quite large.

From your description, I would guess your bulbs will be either Narcissus or Daffodils. They are now beginning to put on new growth and the bulbs are similar. Freezes won't damage the foliage on these bulbs.

When they bloom, it will tell the tale. Please let us know...

I agree that they are probably not crinum bulbs. Crinum bulbs have a thick neck that is usually above ground even if foliage is not present.

Been away for a while and just saw this. Well, shoot. I know there was a crinum in this little bed of bulbs. But now that you mention it, the timing is right for daffodil/narcisscus. And of course crinum have large bulbs. I guess I thought since they were in a really shady spot that maybe they were stunted. And the leaves looked a little too broad for daffodils. Must've been wrong.

I guess I must have killed the crinum... Now I'm regretting that I replanted those bulbs where I did. I left the beds around them pretty bare, anticipating crinum. Then the crinum bulbs I did buy, I stuck in other locations. Guess I'll be digging them up, lol.

@bkrell is the foliage of your mystery plants bearing a resemblance to your daff foliage? I am interested to hear how your bulbs are doing.

I don't know what they are/were. I replanted them at various spots in my back yard. They have long, thin, strappy foliage. In size, I'd say they resemble daffodils. We had that good freeze back in January and it hit them hard. The top half of all the leaves was browned and died. New, unharmed foliage is just now reappearing. Could they have been paperwhites and I just disrupted the bloom by replanting? I remember something white blooming back in the corner where I dug these but can't remember if it was these or the adjacent iris. My daffodils and jonquils that I planted new from bulbs were much smaller plants during the freeze, but their leaves were pretty unphased in comparison to these mystery bulbs.

Bit of a sidenote-my REAL crinum ARE sprouting!!! I bought several off eBay back in late fall, some just listed as "red crinum" and then a few Ellen Bosanquets. During the deep freeze last month, the necks of the Ellens sagged to the ground and turned to mush. yesterday I checked on them and noticed the necks were standing straight up again. I picked at them a little and saw the tips of leaves forming. I was so happy b/c I'd gotten mixed advice on planting them in the fall or waiting until spring. Now to figure out where I'm going to plant the "crinum lolita" I bought from Jenks Farmer.

Stop that! LOL Now I want to go back to their site and shop some more.

I got the C. Menehune from them. It has dark purplish foliage. I am anxious to see it bloom.

Need to look at a Lolita....

Kristi, don't know how close you are to Shreveport, but Bill Welch, Greg Grant, and a bunch of other folks will be speaking at a new "Allen Owings regional gardening symposium" at the American Rose Center on March 9th. Should be neat! I'll be out of town, sadly.

C. Lolita has stalks up to 5 ft tall! I don't know what I got myself into, lol.

Here is a poor photo of a paperwhite that I have blooming now with some winter damaged foliage. I dug some up in another bed and the bulb has a black papery covering.


Wow, Jenks has a nice selection of crinum not too extravagantly priced either. Read your review at DG, I'm impressed that you were impressed!
Also iris would be a rhizome unless it was dutch iris.

That bulb from Jenks was good enough to eat!!! It was incredible! Thinking the mystery bulbs we're definitely Paperwhites after seeing your pictures.
