Would it be possible to have another photo push for emerging growth, now that things are starting to pop out of the ground? When I was first gardening, it was difficult for me to remember what things looked like at that point and I'm sure I weeded a lot of perennials out. My guess is most emerging growth photos would earn an acorn as they are likely the first in that gallery. Just a thought as I watch my Japanese maples all start to unfurl, and welcome the new shoots of perennials poking out of the ground.

Anyone adding their own first image to any gallery earns an acorn even if someone has already added one.

Tarragon new shoots - returning from last year.

I like the idea of finding photos of emerging growth with the caveat that the pictures should be close ups.

It would also be nice to know if emerging growth is from a newly seeded plant or one that is returning. (Not sure if there's actually a difference.)

Date might come in handy as well.

Well, unless something gets moving soon, we'll be way beyond emerging growth photos. It doesn't have to be a contest or promotion, though -- if folks would just snap plants coming out of the ground or trees leafing out and post them to the database, done deal.

I like the idea of incentivizing or promoting the under-represented areas of the database, as a way to get people to see their plants in a new way, and of course share that perspective in a searchable way.

Just as an aside to @Bonehead and @tx_flower_child , I have viewed emerging growth quite differently... like the growth center on a cactus



or branching in response to injury



or a plant leafing out for the season



all of which are interesting as processes and distinct from "spring renewal" or whatever it's called when temperate plants sprout and grow this time of year. So yes, many perspectives are better than one.

@Frenchy21, it would be great if you could add your photos to the database itself, which will preserve it for posterity and be useful information for folks researching particular plants. Open the plant database, locate and open the specific plant, on the left is a box with an option to 'upload photo', then further along you will be asked what gallery this goes to - choose 'emerging growth'. Sorry if this is known info for you, but someone else may benefit from it.

And, Baja, I love seeing how different regions' plants wake up!

I hope others will take the time to contribute their new growth photos as well.

I took some pictures earlier but think I probably deleted them. If I find I still have any, I'll post them. I did find an iris rhizome on the ground today. A squirrel 'emerged it' from a pot.

This is a great idea, Deb -- things are just barely "emerging" here, I'm going to start photographing !

I was able to recover some pictures of emerging growth. Will post them later. I don't want to post any that would duplicate what others might have posted.

If it doesn't rain this afternoon I can probably take another picture or two.

TX, if you think your photos might be duplicates of what is already in the database, just wait a couple weeks and submit an updated photo. I think it is really helpful to see how plants (particularly perennials that go dormant during the winter) look when they pop out of the ground, both as fresh little nubbins and when they have 6-8" growth to them. At some point, I believe the idea is to have tabs within the database for each gallery so a person can quickly pass by all the bloom portraits and check out foliage, new growth, seed pods, etc. Hoping this is on the drawing board, it's been discussed a number of times and seems to be pretty much set up other than the tabbing.
