Well its taken me 5 days...last week my wife was in a car accident. I was in the veggie garden doing some routine maintenance when she called. Of course, I stopped and got there as soon as I could and while the car was totaled, she wasn't hurt. However, in my haste, I left the fence open. When I got home, I got an unfortunate education on what vegetables deer will eat.
All corn, soybeans, sunflowers, hibiscus, okra, the last of carrots & peas...100% gone. A couple dozen seedlings I'd just transitioned to the outside (mostly flowers) 100% gone. Pepper - leaves and flowers all gone, but a couple of maturing peppers left. Tomatoes, zucchini browsed but not significantly damaged. Onions and Asparagus left alone, other than some general physical destruction due to trapsing through.
This is my first year doing veggies and I know I've made plenty of mistakes. But to see all the hard work wiped out like that was tough. Big picture - things (including plants) can be replaced but people can't...so I'm grateful if there was a loss that day it was the car and plants and not my wife. But I'd be lying if it wasn't a bit of a kick to the gut.
Not sure what it is this about this year, but deer are even browsing some of my natives. Time to put my big boy pants on and get back on the saddle I guess...planted some new soybeans, corn and okra earlier this weekend before the rain.
