Well its taken me 5 days...last week my wife was in a car accident. I was in the veggie garden doing some routine maintenance when she called. Of course, I stopped and got there as soon as I could and while the car was totaled, she wasn't hurt. However, in my haste, I left the fence open. When I got home, I got an unfortunate education on what vegetables deer will eat.

All corn, soybeans, sunflowers, hibiscus, okra, the last of carrots & peas...100% gone. A couple dozen seedlings I'd just transitioned to the outside (mostly flowers) 100% gone. Pepper - leaves and flowers all gone, but a couple of maturing peppers left. Tomatoes, zucchini browsed but not significantly damaged. Onions and Asparagus left alone, other than some general physical destruction due to trapsing through.

This is my first year doing veggies and I know I've made plenty of mistakes. But to see all the hard work wiped out like that was tough. Big picture - things (including plants) can be replaced but people can't...so I'm grateful if there was a loss that day it was the car and plants and not my wife. But I'd be lying if it wasn't a bit of a kick to the gut.

Not sure what it is this about this year, but deer are even browsing some of my natives. Time to put my big boy pants on and get back on the saddle I guess...planted some new soybeans, corn and okra earlier this weekend before the rain. Sighing!

Wow! You've really been thru the ringer! Glad your wife is ok. And also glad we have the same philosophy: things can be replaced but people can't.

What do you want to try growing? I can send you almost any kind of veggie seeds. Free of charge to me as well as to you. Send me a tree mail and we can get the ball rolling.

Think of what you might want to grow for fall too.

The okra will likely thrive, but deer love okra plants. That's probably the first plant they demolished. It will enjoy the coming heat, just don't let the deer near it or it'll be gone again.

Hmmm... if the deer don't eat them, maybe we shouldn't eat them either. Whistling
Glad your wife was o.k. and sorry for your losses. I hate to say it but that is gardening. Some years it takes more fortitude.

Thanks all for the empathy. I really have no one to blame but myself. Spent a couple weeks building the fence in February, but "the gate don't close itself".

I tell myself this is just another (albeit painful) part of the process. I know much better now about what I want to plant, where, when & how much. I've always stuck mostly with the natives prior.

@tx_flower_child - thanks also for your generosity. I was able to do some replanting of soybeans, corn & okra. Not sure if its too late or not, but right now I think I'm good. The ripening of my first set of tomatoes came at a good time for the spirit. Determined to be well prepared for fall garden Smiling

The best news of the day is of you wife being OK!!! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

Might I suggest putting a spring with a latch on your gate to make it self closing. Just a thought. No deer here., just past experience with little munchkins that liked to help dig holes and pull 'weeds.'
