I've got two different cultivars that have a single scape that shot up way earlier than they should.

At first I thought they were prebloom scapes. But I just found a old thread from 2011 in this forum that showed prebloom scapes as coming up from outside the fan. Well I ran outside to check and both scapes are coming up from within the fan.

Both cultivars (Carousel Princess & Raspberry Bouquet) have been in my garden for years and have consistently bloomed at the later end of midseason. RB is going to bloom with the early bloomers this year. CP could also bloom with the early or early-mid bloomers.

Has anyone had this happen before where a daylily switches its blooming time dramatically? RB was dug up & replanted last year but I don't see why that should change the bloom time. The other daylilies in the same bed (that were also dug & replanted) are blooming at their correct times. CP has had no change whatsoever.

It's probably not a dramatic difference, but I've had two bloom considerably earlier than usual and out of their normal sequence with the other daylilies..

My earliest daylilies don't usually bloom until about the third week of June. Unique Purple first bloomed last year on July 12 and was my first daylily to bloom this year on June 6. The bloom and the few that followed it were all pretty ugly and not like the usual ones. But it does have a new scape that looks like it will bloom at its normal time.

And Shake the Mountains is registered as a midseason and normally blooms midseason here, but it has already had a couple of blooms, the first on June 20 which would put it with the early blooming daylilies.

DLBee did you happen to notice if the scapes on the early ones was coming from the fan or not? They could be prebloom scapes. Otherwise I would say that blooming over a month early is definitely dramatic!

Raspberry Bouquet will most likely bloom over the weekend. I'm curious to see if the bloom is odd. I don't think it has ever had an odd bloom. I doubt it will get another scape because it lost fans this spring from critters.

I do expect Carousel Princess to get more scapes later in the season. CP is the only daylily that ever rebloomed for me so I thought it was definitely a prebloom scape. But it doesn't seem to be.

At least I'm not alone in noticing this! I wonder if next year they'll go back to their normal bloom time?

It's not something I've ever paid attention to, but just checked and the scapes that have bloomed on both Unique Purple and Shake the Mountains are outside the fans so they must be prebloom scapes. They both have two scapes inside the fans, and the ones on Shake the Mountains are the same size as the scape that has already bloomed but the ones on Unique Purple are shorter and less developed. The blooms on StM were normal.

Winter here lasted longer than normal, but there weren't any late frosts like usual. May and June have been VERY wet, and I wondered if that had something to do with the weird bloom timing.

Next year, who knows what the timing will be? It seems there is always something unexpected in the garden.

Elena, many of mine seem to be out of sync, the early varieties aren't blooming yet, but the some of the mid-season ones are. It was a long winter, no spring, straight to heat and now it's cool and wet...

Okay, so maybe the weather is the cause. Our winter was cold and Spring was cooler than normal but without any late frosts. I'd say we had the perfect amount of rainfall too.

I checked my records again and there is some variation from year to year for blooming times. But both typically bloom mid-July. Raspberry Bouquet will bloom tomorrow! I'm still waiting on some of my early bloomers to start. I've only had more than 1-2 daylilies in bloom this week & just started making crosses yesterday. So I consider this the early part of the Early season.

I guess it's good because now I can cross it with early bloomers which I never could do before!

Thru this thread I learned the answer to a question I had. But I also gained a new question. I am really new to daylilies although I have a lot of new ones this year. I have a day lily named Ruby Claire Sims that has a scape coming up out of the ground and not out of the fan. I was quite shocked. Now I have learned that is called a prebloom scape. I'm kind of confused about what that is. Or maybe I just need to take the name "prebloom scape" literally. Would someone like to explain it more fully to me. What is the cause of that? Is it bad or good or neither?

I've noticed that this year (on the boundary of Zones 7/8), I've had more daylilies blooming out of sync with one another than ever. We're getting excellent performance this year, in part because we've had 2 very good years of moisture after about a decade of drought, but this out-of-sync issue does seem to be a downside of this year.

Granted, most of my 150 or so are blooming in line with one another - and there's always an issue with the cycle beginning earlier or later depending on weather. For instance, I know when peak daylily season will be in a given year based on when my earliest non-Stella bloomer, "Cosmic Hummingbird", first blooms (usually around May 12; this year, it was May 4).

But yeah, I have early season daylilies like "Frank Gladney" just starting to bloom, and some of my first non-Stellas to bloom this year are categorized as midseason bloomers. It's still a small percentage of my overall selection, but bigger than usual.

Here is a thread that explains what a pre bloom scape is. It seems it is pretty common, and I remember the first one I had and how thrilled I was to have such an early blooming plant. I think it was 'Optical Delight', it has never bloomed that early again!

Well I feel stupid. What I thought was Raspberry Bouquet bloomed today. Only it isn't RB. It's Pearl Hammond. Apparently when the squirrels dug up fans & markers I mixed up the markers.

Raspberry Bouquet does have a scape but I think it will bloom closer to its normal time.

Elena, we all get to go through the critters renaming our plants for us... Doesn't make you stupid- but maybe like the rest of us, just a little squirrelly (okay okay I know bad pun, bad pun!- couldn't resist though)
