Forgot to mention that I'm now having some real success with stored pollen, but never with frozen, only refrigerated. I just pull stamens before we hit 80 degrees or so, and put them (along with whatever part of the stamen stem comes with it) right into a pillbox and then into the house (below 80 degrees). They go into the fridge anywhere from right away to up to a day later. So far, big healthy maturing pods are setting from crosses made with refrigerated pollen that has been up to 10 days old. I usually give them about five minutes outside of the fridge before I use them for crossing. But, the pillbox is many-celled, so most fridge pollen gets in and out of the fridge each day (from 45 to 90 degrees cycle), and so far, it has worked well. After about 10 days, though, the pollen does get degraded and does not set further pods for me.

Maybe next year I will try the frozen route again to see if I can get a first viable pod to set. But, for now, 10 days of access to refrigerated stored pollen has been a great boon!

Good to know Tina. I will try that this summer. I just have had no luck with frozen pollen. I have tried frozen for 3 years now and cannot set a pod.

There was a seller on the Lilyauction who sold them. He now has his own website. He sells all kinds of hybridizing supplies. Look for microcentrifuge tubes. I also get those green hybridizing hang tags from him and the little plastic bags for seed storage. He also has little storage boxes for the vials.

That link doesn't work anymore. It redirects you to a site selling self-mastery courses and stuff.

They no longer sell hybridizing stuff and have some other type of business. He sold out of all he had before he let the website go.

You can get the micro-centrifuge tubes on amazon, and the little boxes to store them in. That is where I got mine. I think I bought my reverse tweezers for holding the anthers there too. As for the colored wires for marking crosses. I just save all my bread twisties and use those in different combos to mark the pollen parent.
I have had really good luck with stored frozen pollen. You need to let it dry thoroughly before freezing and make sure no part of the stamen is left on the anther, and remember to let it thaw for 1/2 hour or so before using.
It's my cats world, I'm just here to open the cans.
