Since the summer, I have collected over 300 different sempervivum. I have both Kevin Vaughn's book and Howard and Sally Willis's book, both of which I have read multiple times. I am quite new to Sempervivum. I have ordered sempervivum from nearly all the nurseries in the United States listed on this site as Succulent Nurseries by ValleyLynn. What other resources, links, books, and contacts should I make myself familiar with? I appreciate any and all advice. Personal messages and public posts are both welcome.

Thanks,

Tim Nichols

Welcome! @mrmaple! You're gotten a great case of Sempervivitus! Where are you located?
If you can travel you should plan to come to the Kevin Vaughn Hybridizing Clinic April 26th to 28th, 2019 in Oregon.
I'm pretty much a semp newbie, but I'm hooked too. They're fascinating, fun plants!
I'll let the others give you more links and info.

@plantmanager Kevin Vaughn's hybridizing clinic sounds amazing. I have watched a few youtube videos. I would love to, but unfortunately that is my peak time in sales at my nursery and I cannot get that far away. Sempervivum are clearly addicting, but lucky for me, I can count them as a business expense and make the offshoots available at the nursery.

Ah, I wondered if you were a nurseryman. I bet you specialize in Maples? I'm glad you're adding the semps. We need more nurseries carrying semps so we can buy them wherever we travel. Lovey dubby

Edited to say that if you could get to Oregon during your off season, you'd find that everyone would be giving you garden and nursery tours. I know you'd be welcomed with open arms by all of these great semp people who live there.

I'm a plant collector at heart. Selling is the main way to fuel the addiction. Haha... I won't be selling sempervivum for a while. Right now I am doing my best to learn, experience, and make mistakes.

I will be in Oregon in October of 2019. I will definitely plan for some visits.

I'm so glad you'll be able to go to Oregon. There are so many semp lovers there and plenty of nurseries and gardens to visit. I still need to do the same thing.

Hi Tim, and a big Welcome! to NGA. So glad you found your way here to the Sempervivum Forum.
We would love to see photos of your new semps. We love photos.

We would love to show you around the Willamette Valley, OR when you come out next year. We love meeting new semp/plant lovers. @JungleShadows Kevin would be happy to give you a tour of his hybridizing projects, which includes thousands of sempervivum seedlings, and much more.

How are you growing your semps? What are your special growing challenges?

A lot of my photos right now wouldn't be too impressive as most of my Sempervivum are simply 1 small rosette in a 2 or 4 inch pot. As they get large and fill out I will definitely be taking more photos and sharing them. I have already been messaging with Kevin.

I do not know many growing challenges yet as until recently I only grew Sempervivum tectorum, which I have been growing since I was 4. For them, they grew great in our natural red clay in the ground, and did well in nearly any pot we put them in as long as it had good drainage. They handled our mild full sun, but I will probably be giving many of my new hybrids some protection until I have more to trial with.

The only challenge I have noticed is birds have found my small cold frames, so I will be covering them with white poly later today.

Hey MrMaple-

I am new to this plant as well and have become obsessed with them. If you already haven't found it, here is the link to the database of semp varieties.

Hey Tim, how are you semps doing? Hope you have weathered the year 2020 and are unscathed.
