@LorettaNJ O You were fortunate to get the seeds. Sorry they didn't perform well. I grew my first one from a packet of wildflower seeds. Since I had noticed the tubers were for sale, that spring, which I just happened to see, I thought not much more about it. That is, until I saw a Thompson & Morgan catalog, which offered money, for seeds! Then researched it & had already accidentally pulled it up, along with weeds & it was so extremely hot that day, just threw away... but had smelled them first, so I new exactly what it was. But the garbage collection went out & I was too late to retrieve it. If it hadn't been nearly 95 F that day, I might have replanted it, but felt like I was nearly ready to faint, as it was humid & no breeze, either. Like a heatwave... Oh well, I learned my lesson. Now, it is a matter of sowing indoors, to get an early start.
The original one I grew, was near the foundation of the house, near brick & had western exposure, so it really got reflected heat, to keep it warm & bloomed approximately just over 3 months later. The soil was sandy, so that may have helped prevent the seedling, which eventually grew tubers, from rotting
