Sherry, that spot does look fairly promising. Hopefully there's no treated lumber in there, though.

If you have leaves and grass clippings, you could just start covering the wood with that. After a few seasons of being covered with moist compostable material, it'll start breaking down. Once you start growing plants and getting worms and soil bacteria going in there, the breaking down of the lumber will accelerate quite quickly.
