I have found out the hard way to NEVER plant under a maple tree. I made my 90 yr old mom a memorial garden from my sister's hosta. They were really struggling so I called Bluegrass Hosta Farm and she said that the feeder roots would choke them out Sad One option would be to take a spade and at least monthly cut a circle around each one. They look better this year!!
