Ingrid, click on your profile, either the blue person on the upper right or on your user name in your post and at the top you'll see the link " Change your public profile. That's where you add your avatar photo as well as add other things that will appear on your profile and/or forum posts like a first name, location, etc.
Make sure you hit the Save changes button.
