Welcome, Brenda to this site and to your new hobby. This is a good place to get answers to your plant questions.

If your self-watering planter (Lechuza?) was properly set-up, then following the directions you were given should be fine. The indicator will let you know when it needs water and that will soon learn how often that is.

An occasional yellow leaf is normal and not a sign that there is a problem. Focus on the new growth that should remain healthy.
