Cousin - this past winter took quite a toll on shrubs in my garden. Blame the polar vortex. Post your question over on the tree and shrub forum. You might get more responses for your tree. If you're going to prune out the dead stuff, do it soon. You wouldn't want young resprouting going into winter.
