The "hyper-thorniness" doesn't always present. What is highly suggestive of RRD is that all the growth buds are stimulated -- three at each node, and every node along the stem -- and what's coming out is abnormal-looking. It's not just that it's red. If you imagine the pictures are in black-and-white, it still looks wrong.
