There are several ways one can make compost, and I have done them practically all:

- mix kitchen scraps in the soil directly as your friends do
- bury them in the garden wherever there is a bare spot
- dump them in my compost bins when I run out of bare soil, especially in the spring when every inch in my garden is occupied.

I don't sweat the stuff; compost happens in nature all the time. Gardening is supposed to be relaxing. I do not worry too much about it and enjoy the experience.
