Sharon is right. Designs I've seen on the net leave very little room in the top terminus of the spiral. I wanted the top to be a complete circle before it began its descent, in order to have a nice 12" wide growing circle. Thus, I completed the circle first and then pushed out further before beginning the descent into the middle layer.
