Fear and bad reputation (for no reason) are the main reason for killing them. The elders teach the children to kill them without mercy. Unfortunately, I was raised that way too, but when I overcame my fear a couple of years ago, I started rescuing them and taking them to the swamp away from people and domestic animals. Now if someone close to me sees a snake they don't kill it at first sight but call me to try to catch it.
Even worse is that we have a legless lizard that often dies because people mistake it for a snake, and it is very useful because it sometimes feeds on venomous snakes.
