Why cut the leaves? Just buy a bag of lime sulphur and spray the plant when the first signs of powdery mildew appear in the neighborhood. It's dirt cheap, works well and it washes away with water. It's still the most effective remedy for powdery mildew this side of pure elemental sufur, which requires specialized equipment to be applied.
Use lime sulfur and like me you'll get stuff like this:

As an aside I did not expect zucchini to be ready for harvest so early: this new hybrid has been pretty surprising so far.
