If you grab the base of the plant/ pup you want to separate and gently pull sideways and slightly down they will separate . There will some breakage at the root level ,but as long as you give them time to callous over (few days to a week depending your climate ) them they will be ok .

If you want to take out some of the height then follow baja's advice , again making sure you give the plant base time to heal / callous before you pot up
