Heavy ceramic pots often have just one hole in the center, and just don't seem to drain well, don't allow soil to breathe. I have had plants fail due to that type of pot. Nursery plastic with lots of holes work great for me. I don't think you want to go way bigger all at once though.
And, yes, this isn't an easy fix, given it is already struggling and not happy in FL.
Crossing Fingers! good luck but remember the important thing is the memory, NOT the specific plant.
Plant it and they will come.
