Gasterias and Haworthias (and at least some of their hybrids, presumably) are propagated from leaves, though aloes are not. It supposedly works better with the cut end buried a little. New rosettes form along the side of the leaf. I think it helps to water (sparingly), and you might have to be patient. I have never tried. My Gasterias offset and give me offspring that way.
