I'm no expert by any means, but I just stick mine in dirt...they take for me. Also near where I pot stuff is a shed. I toss leaves and stems there...it is filling in nicely and the ghosties,so far, have come back for me in the spring. Yes I'm south of you, but we do get short hard freezes in winter.
Each cloud has a silver lineing if only you look for it.
