My Caramella grew to 6' the first year, and bloomed pretty much nonstop. I thought it was supposed to be a small shrub, so I placed it in front of a bed of small hostas. oops. I left it there, though, because it was so beautiful that it deserved to be front and center.
Today I uncovered my Cecil Brunner, and took a closer look. Sure enough, all but 2 of the canes are thornless, but there are 2 that have thorns here and there! Other than the random prickles, the cane looks just like all the others on the plant. It isn't coming from any deeper, and I don't think my plant is grafted anyway.
My Crown Princess Margareta grows this way also. The majority of the canes have no thorns, and a few have big thorns widely spaced. Other people told me it must have been mislabeled, but everything about it is exactly as it should be. To me, it has a wonderful scent, yet other people say their Crown P. M. has no scent. I wonder if mine is a sport?
This year, I will pay attention to the blossoms on the thornless canes and compare their scent to those on the thorned canes.
Remember that children, marriages, and flower gardens reflect the kind of care they get.
