I have been mixing some pellets with the potting soil along with extra perlite for better drainage, I really need that here. If you are going to throw it on the ground be sure to water it in good and do it as early as possible because this stuff seemed to be attracting flies last year. So with the exception of early spring I mix it with the potting soil and throw the Milorganite on top of the ground around the hostas and daylilies. The Milorganite does not attract flies and you might think it would. LOL.
I have not seen the need to side dress the hostas they do quite well with the Milorganite, the pellets I throw out in the spring is like a treat for them also a good spray of Miracle Grow (hose feeder) in the fall. I do love my hostas!!
