Some alien substance from the fish poop? Vitamins, or as Jim suggests too much calcium.

Have you tested your aquarium water's pH, Ursula? My well water has a pH of 8.2 and if I use it too much for watering the orchids I do see more spots and such as well as 'the usual' hard water deposits on the leaves.
