This is the plant you're referring to:

Goumi (Elaeagnus multiflora)

This plant is highly prized in permaculture circles for the reasons you mentioned above, as well as the fact that it is a hardy and easy to grow perennial. I've never grown it though but I'd be interested to know how your test goes.
